Hi
If I cut the pollen stalk things off my lilies will they die quicker?
Have some beautiful lilies that have fully opened now but the pollen is a pain when it starts to drop...
thank you x

I doubt it, but I don’t know. If you are going to do this, do it early on before the pollen ripens and sheds everywhere. Try to collect the stamens in a tissue as you snip to minimize mess

I’ve always wanted to know this! Stupid question but does it affect the scent at all?

Trethew · 04/01/2019 22:32

If I remember correctly the scent is mainly emitted from the petals so, no, castrating them should not affect the scent.

Pull it off by hand as the flower starts opening and before it gets powdery - when you cut, there's a tendency to cut off the stigma (the longer, central part with no pollen) and the whole flower has an ugly, cut off look about it.

TheMerryWidow1 · 10/01/2019 14:19

no don't worry they won't die quicker or lose their lovely scent

A lot of the scent is produced by the stigma (the long bit with a sticky blobby end in the middle of the flower) so don't cut that bit off.

I always cut off the pollen, it’s a nightmare, staining everything it touches. I hold some kitchen paper under the stamen as I cut to catch it.

WinterTune · 24/01/2019 21:45

I do this to my lilies as the pollen from any lily plant is poisonous to cats.

WinterTune · 24/01/2019 21:46

... so no it doesn't make them lose their scent and I'm pretty sure they keep just as long as if the pollen stalls remain.

Optimist1 · 24/01/2019 21:49

I use Beebumble's technique and have never noticed a reduction in the smell.
