I’m rebuilding my dahlia patch, have removed some poor performers and want to add in a bright pink one. Preferably s ball dahlia, but cactus would be good too. Any recommendations? Thank you.

I grow them in pots. No special recommendations though. I like cactus and red or pink.

Sarah Raven's prices are ridiculous. I order from JP Parkers who are consistently reliable and well priced.

I got some lovely ones from SR last summer, planted 2 in a wooden trough/box like planter and the other 2 in flower bed. I cut them back in late October and put cloches over with wood wool. Fully expecting frosts etc but it's been so mild I'm worried I've killed them. Does anyone else leave them outside?

Oh dear this has reminded me that mine are still out in pots with their decaying green parts showing 🙈 I'll see if I can rescue them but suspect I will be shopping for more

I've ordered
Penhill - watermelon & dark monarch
Cafe au Lait
Wine eyed Jill
Belle of Barmera
Islander

All from Peter Nyssen - at half Sarah Raven prices

whataboutbob · 13/01/2019 18:01

I agree Sarah raven is overpriced. However, £4.50 per tuber + p&p is not really that bad for a hobby which will give you lots of pleasure

Ok I’ve done it now. Went and ordered 3 dahlias fro m J Parker, only to realise that it is 3 sets of 3 tubers!
If anyone lives in SW London and can collect, I am happy too give tubers away. They are bright colours: Sandra ( pink) Rocco ( scarlet) and urchin ( a kind of Scarlett pink).
Pm me anyone if you d like some free dahlias.

I'm a Dhalia fan. I leave mine in the ground.

Mine where really poor last year though, not sure what I did wrong I thought they would be thrilled with all that hot air!

ppeatfruit · 20/01/2019 11:03

Maybe it was TOO hot Burps Grin

greathat · 20/01/2019 11:06

I grew mine from seed about 6 years ago. Every year I dig up and overwinter the tubers. They get bigger and bigger every year.

greathat · 20/01/2019 11:09

They are very easy to grow from seed by the way

ppeatfruit · 20/01/2019 11:10

Do you remove the little shoots on the tubers and grow them on? Monty Don did greathat

StartedEarly · 20/01/2019 11:10

I've never dug them up and a hardy few come up year after year. I usually grow some from seed and while it's unlikely they are show material they are pretty (to those who like Dahlias).

ppeatfruit · 20/01/2019 11:20

Started Oh they're more than pretty, some of them are extraordinarily beautiful, the very dark reds, and their structure is almost unreal!

greathat · 20/01/2019 21:50

@ppeatfruit nope not tried that!
