DS loves house plants - he in on the Autistic Spectrum, and loves caring for them and they bring him a lot of joy (I am an outdoor gardener and kill houseplants at 20 paces...) He wants a stand for his plants: something where they can be displayed against his wall. I'd love something a little bit stylish/that doesn't look too old granny-ish for him (he probably wouldn't care) and it needs to be relatively tight to the wall (ie not sticking out too far) - length along the wall is less of an issue. Google is throwing up a few things but I'm struggling: any suggestions?? I don't want to blow the budget, but something reasonably sturdy is certainly required...

Sounds great! Would the Ikea Salladskal or Satsumas ladder stand fit the bill? Neither accommodate very big pots.

Actually it looks like the Salladskal is only available online at present.

Searching 'ladder plant stands' might throw up some alternatives.

I've found some ideas on ebay but I'm on the app and can't link them right now.

If you try '5 tier wooden plant stand' on ebay there's one for about £16. It's 96x96cmand 25cm deep. If it's any good you could add a second one for extra plant space Grin

You're looking for a plant etagere. Google it - there are loads of designs

fanomoninon · 02/12/2018 22:12

OOh, I like the Ikea one (not a phrase I usually use...) and I found the £16 one too Gareth - is a £16 one going to be sturdy enough though...?

Thanks for the lingo, Jellyslice :-)

It looks reasonable but would probably be better fixed to the wall for added security. It seems to accommodate 20cm+ diameter pots so that's quite a lot of weight on it.

Ikea do free spare brackets and screws by post online. The Kallax safety-wall brackets might work??
Ebay's always a bit risky isn't it Grin

The Ikea one sounds like a good bet but your boy might be limited to small plants as the pots are only 12.5cm diameter. I'm forever repotting my houseplants as they seem to outgrow their containers constantly. And I never have enough large pots to move them into Grin

Worth keeping an eye on Ikea in 2019 as they often launch new outdoor/gardening products in the spring.

My worry is that he'll put his beanbag next to the plant ladder and everything will end up on his head!

I'll measure his plant pots tomorrow when he's at school but I suspect quite a few are are too big already, 12.5 is pretty diddy. But it might work as a nursery with his larger pots elsewhere: the bigger ones live next to his bed at the mo, and there's actually quite a bit of space there...

Hummm. £16 is just feeling too good to be true!

I love that he's so interested in plants!

I know what you mean about the £16 one. I guess there's not too much to it for them to get wrong. I'd be slightly worried about split wood/splinters/dodgy screw holes. That said I had a wooden garden arch with similar issues and I raised it with ebay and they refunded.

:-) Me too: but I concede his excitement in the Wisley shop isn't standard behaviour for a 14 yo boy...!

Brilliant! Is he getting lots of plant-based gifts for Christmas? How does he feel about outdoor gardening Grin

I keep meaning to go to Wisley, it's only round the M25 from me. It looks ace!

fanomoninon · 03/12/2018 15:59

He's mostly asked for stuff around plants, birdwatching and board games: all the geek joys! There is some tech in there too to even out the good sense!

Wisley is great - we go a lot, and there's always something to enjoy even in the most miserable times of year. And I could move into the greenhouse. But if you love plants, the shop is dangerous...
