Ladybirds, where do they live?

We desperately need them in our garden. In fact we haven't seen 1 yet! So we are going with N.G. Bug Finder to catch a few of the cuties, give them a new home and a feast of black fly. So where do we go searching?

ds bought me a lovely ladybird house that also houses solitary bees. I even went and bought some 'ladybird attractant'. Haven't seen one single ladybird. The woodlice are making good use of it though

ktmoomoo · 18/06/2007 19:57

lady birds love lots of chemical free plants and you can buy a lady bird house from garden centers too [ dont laugh it true ]

ktmoomoo · 18/06/2007 19:58

erm not sure you can buy them on line ..... but if i wrong i oppologise xxxx

Sixer · 18/06/2007 19:59

ahhh yes, i spotted those little wooden houses at the garden centre the other day. pick it up, put it down, pick it up again.. decided nah, we need ladybirds to move in, and as you've said we haven't seen any either. Is there a ladybird dance we could try??

I wish I'd known they were worth something a couple of months ago -our house was full of them. I could have made a fortune

What attracts them then? Whatever it is we must have had it in abundance !

Sixer · 18/06/2007 20:01

And it's true, you can buy them on-line at the prices below . Would much rather find them, then maybe buy them a little house (from garden centre), and supply blackfly.

pavlovthecat · 18/06/2007 20:03

You can buy them from some garden centres apparantly (according to my very wise DP )

ktmoomoo · 18/06/2007 20:04

feeling sorry for ikkle spotty ladybirds transported in boxes lol have you got a link for the site xx

Sixer · 18/06/2007 20:08

I refuse point blank to buy a bug on line. Someone somewhere knows where the Ladybirds live. £14.95 for 25??!?!?? I've got tonnes of blackfly, is that of any use to anyone, shall i ebay the pests.

SomethingIncrediblyWitty · 18/06/2007 20:09

Am i right in assuming you know what ladybird larvae look like and have tried looking for them rather than fully grown ladybirds? Sorry, but i know people who can't tell the difference between earwigs and woodlice so it wouldn't be too strange!

pavlovthecat · 18/06/2007 20:16

you might find a little ladybird house looking here

Sixer · 18/06/2007 20:17

Yes we do know what it looks like. DS1 made sure of that one.

SomethingIncrediblyWitty · 18/06/2007 20:20

Lol. Many appleogies then! Had to check - even my dh who is a gardener by trade thought they were something else until i told him.

Sixer · 18/06/2007 20:20

pavlovthecat you diamond. Brilliant, have printed it out, thanks. Will begin the search tomorrow, straight after school.

OP posts:
Sixer · 18/06/2007 20:21

pavlovthecat · 18/06/2007 20:22

glad to have been assistance! I love ladybugs. They are beautiful. Not those nasty ones that have come over from foreign climes, they are viscious so watch out for them. You will know them, they are often yellow, and have lots and lots of spots, unlike our sophisticated bugs with a few

wheresthehamster · 18/06/2007 20:24

Have just got the frying pan reference. Better late than never.

Sixer · 18/06/2007 20:27

OMG a vicious Ladybird. Does it have teeth, I'm scared now ... ohhhh yellow you say... lots of spots you say... fangs? what else? what can it DO?
