I have nigella, lilies etc growing like mad and bending forward towards the sun (v directional light in my border) they need staking (probably should have done it earlier) but given that DS (3) loves poking around, stakes/sticks are a bit risky for his eyes. any suggestions (without breaking the bank) to how to support plants safely for him

Hi there - you can do a variety of things. Cheapest will be sticks and you can top them with something. I have used corks before but you can buy "toppers" (not sure what they are called but garden centres will be happy to sell!).

There are also round plant supports which are attached to sticks. The top is wire framework which allows plants to grow through. Maybe better for next year as it might be difficult to thread plants through.

Another one for next year is wide meshed netting but again it will need support at the corners.

Top sticks with small plastic cartons, eg 35mm film canisters, probiotic cartons or glass jars.
