i love the gardening topic! feels so peaceful here

annnnnyhoo...

have found www.suttons.co.uk/pd_143402_Field_Poppy_Seeds.htm these ones and afew others on there (tho sadly they are sold out of the big oriental ones). are these as good as anything, or is there something better to do? i have some nearly empty beds i can sow...

also, will the rabbits devour them? (ah... new thread idea...)

Californian poppies are lovely - they are usuauly bright orange and self-seed - does anyone know where I can buy the seeds online? I can't see them here.

depending on where you are, lots of poppies already have seed heads on them. once they are dried, harvest a few of the 'pepperpots' and shake them whereever you want them to grow next year. nothing else necessary.

do you have anyone nearby with them in their gardens where you can go with a big smile and ask them nicely for a few pepperpots?

If I plant seeds now will they flower this year?

TranquilaManana · 17/06/2007 11:01

um... ive seen a fair few on the roadsides near me... dont wan to pick the, coz theyre for everyone to enjoy arent they? but... what is this pepperpot thing? is that after they have stopped being all red and pretty?

cornsilk - no idea, thought id sow them now and if they come up this tr, gret, if not, they will nxt year...am i right??

if you plant this year they won't flower till next. the seeds may need a cold spell to make them germinate. (don't know if poppies work like this) or if some of them germinate, they will die before they flower. You can save the pepperpots up the end of winter and scatter them then.

i don't know if it is legal to pick roadside poppy seeds. by january the garden centers will have seeds again. they ought to have a wild poppy variety.

pepperpot is the seed casing that holds the little seeds after the petals disappear.

TranquilaManana · 17/06/2007 11:21

so, dont sow them tll winter then?
