What is this plant left by previous owner?

Hi. The previous owner left a plant in a pot and I have no idea what it is. I mulched and watered it through the year in the hope it might flower and give more of a clue as to what it is but there has not been a peep of any blooms. So I am hoping some of you more experienced gardeners can help me identify it from leaf alone.

(Ignore the buddleia that's sprouted in the pot along side it)

Looks a bit like a bay to me. Maybe bought as a small plant. Do the leaves smell?

Urbanbeetler · 11/10/2018 17:54

I thought bay too, but the leaves look a bit soft. Are they slightly shiney and stiff or soft?

Beetie1 · 11/10/2018 19:47

The leaves are soft. I have two big bays and I don't think it is that. These leaves have a bit of a serrated edge.

The leaves in the second photo are newer growth leaves (as seen in the top left of the first photo) which have grown smaller than the older leaves shown in the first photo to be going a bit yellow now.

Also the pot originally had a knackered old wire frame stuck in it so I wondered if it was some sort of climber?

Could it be Chaenomeles Japonica, flowering quince? It tends to have an open growing style.

I've looked at the rhs description of Chaenomeles Japonica, and mine isn't spiny so I don't think it is that.

Could you repot it for next year and give it another chance to flower? I have a tiny garden now so everything in it has to offer good value, but I am giving it a couple of years before I start anything drastic so I know which plants are giving what!

whojamaflip · 13/10/2018 09:18

Could it be goat willow? If so get rid - it will seed everywhere!

I'm thinking that whatever was in the pot has died and the plant there is a blow in (literally!)

weaselwords · 13/10/2018 09:27

Mahonia?

sewonandsewon · 16/10/2018 08:12

I have one of these in a pot and it is a self seeded willow - it doesn't do anything more exciting than it is now though apart from getting bigger, but it is a useful space filler - keep an eye out for it sprouting babies everywhere though!

? A poorly camellia (sp)

Roystonv · 16/10/2018 08:20

Sorry not read op properly. It is definitely a bay.

Roystonv · 16/10/2018 08:23

Ffs think you have 3 plants there or more! So ? Vandalizing yellowing leaf, def Bay and the buddhlia you mentioned. Sorry!

Roystonv · 16/10/2018 08:27

Right last try before I leave mn in a cloud of shame at being so stupid - should read ? camellia with the yellowing leaf (how did it get vandalizing from camellia?)

goldenfleck · 17/10/2018 19:35

My first thought was goat willow as well
