We moved into a new house and have a garden for the first time. I have no idea what any of the plants are so no idea how to care for them.
I also have a dog and a baby so want to make sure they aren't poisonous.
Can anyone help?

First one is possibly crab apple I think.

FairfaxAikman · 30/09/2018 13:08

Bush 2 - I have pics but can't upload until tomorrow due to pic limit

Bush 1 is a rhodedenron

FairfaxAikman · 30/09/2018 13:09

They are small and we were told cherry by old owners but looks like no cherry I've ever seen.

I thought Rhododendrons flowered Holey? This never has.

They are definitely not cherries.

Ta1kinpeace · 30/09/2018 13:15

Tree is an ornamental crab apple.
Beautiful flowers in spring.
Fruit in autumn.
Fruit are pretty bitter and tasteless - but can make excellent jelly to go with cold meats

HoleyCoMoley · 30/09/2018 13:15

How long have you been at the house, rhodedenrons flower around may but sometimes they don't, I've tried to post a link but if you Google it it tells you how to cure it, I think the first one is rose hip.

SpoonBlender · 30/09/2018 13:19

Seconding both IDs above, crabapple and rhodie. The rhododendron is poisonous to dogs and you'll probably want to be rid of it. You'll have to dig out the roots or they'll just resprout.

The crabapple fruit really are mini apples, and with that colour might even be ripe enough to nibble - ours aren't that far along yet, still mouth-puckeringly sharp.

HoleyCoMoley · 30/09/2018 13:20

If it is crabapple I'd really like to plant one, does it have blossom.

Ta1kinpeace · 30/09/2018 13:24

Do you have a link for that ?
As I have the Kew poisonous plants book and it does not say that ...

Rhododendrons are lovely garden plants.

HoleyCoMoley · 30/09/2018 13:40

The dogs trust list all the plants and shrubs toxic to dogs

Ta1kinpeace · 30/09/2018 13:42

Most garden plants are toxic if eaten in quantities
but they are so bitter that no animal or human every ingests a dangerous dose
so there is no need to remove things like rhododendrons or foxgloves or lilies or potatoes etc etc

GerdaLovesLili · 30/09/2018 13:50

Is tree one a serviceberry? I can't see the picture properly but the tree looks more like that than a crab-apple to me. www.mailordertrees.co.uk/collections/amelanchier-trees/products/amelanchier-ballerina-snowy-mespilus-tree

SpoonBlender · 30/09/2018 23:24

@Ta1kinpeace Yes - American sites but rhodies are largely the same worldwide.

Beaverlac · 30/09/2018 23:33

If thephotos are recent I’d say the tree is a crab apple too. @GerdaLovesLili another name for the amelanchier is Juneberry, which indicates its flowering season, and the berries are small, not the large fruits in the photo.

longwayoff · 03/10/2018 15:22

The rhododendron in pic already has its flower buds for next year. Leave it alone and it should flower April or May. It wont kill your dog.

AdaColeman · 03/10/2018 15:37

The crab apple tree looks like Malus 'Gorgeous' which if it is, makes a very good jelly. The birds will love the fruits, especially if it's a hard winter.

longwayoff · 03/10/2018 15:56

Thats a lovely crab apple, wouldnt mind one my self

FairfaxAikman · 08/10/2018 18:27

Got a better pic of the fruit. Surely that's too small for crab apple?

Also can you help me identify this second bush?

The evergreen is a Pieris. Worth keeping. Not sure about crab apples but there are many different ones.

longwayoff · 08/10/2018 20:45

Just googled Malus gorgeous as suggested by adacoleman. Looks right, I'm sure she's correct. One in a pot on same page costs £35 so I think you've got a bargain.
