I want to grow my own veggies as I think J will really like doing it as well, but we're only ion this house for another year max. so not sure if digging out an area etc will be an option, so is there any veggies/fruit (berries and such) that can be grown in pots/ on little trees?

also how would you go about the garden patch for future referance. i'd also like to grow herbs as well if I can.

ooh and wahht should I grow? - was thinking carrotts, peas beans potatoes swedes etc but don't really know anything about what I can/could grow.

i'm growing carrots in a pot a the moment, they seem to be taking quite well, we'll see next month!

i prefer growing in pots and bags, i have more control of snails, easier to keep an eye on. most of my beds are in shade too. you can grow loads of things, blueberries, courgettes tomatoes peppers carrots. not sure re peas and beans. herbs easy and fun.

my local shop is still selling little plants of many sorts. google 'container gardening' or go to library for more.

fishie · 12/06/2007 08:39

oh and most veg things only live one seasson so you just start again in spring with yoru own seed if you are well prepared. you can get fruit bushes etc when you move.

thanks guys that's reallu helpful, do you need a greenhouse or anything like that?

have i missed the boat for this year then?

Potatoes can grow in a big tub (but I'm not sure when to plant them)

munz · 12/06/2007 08:47

ok will ahve to pinch a few of dad's tubs

is the garden centre the best place to buy seeds, or the diy shop? (we don't have a hard wear stort around here.)

a nursery or garden centre best bet, you shoudl still be able to get some plants. bit late for seeds i think. ring them up first to check. or fete type events usually have a few plants at this time of year. look for tomatoes and courgettes. beans if you've got a sunny bed for them (mine are tragic little stalks).

you could look at later crops like leeks from seed, i am tryign them this year and you have never seen anything grow so slowwwwwly they are like teeny blades of grass after three months but it is entertaining and educational (mainly for me).

Peas and beans grow quickly but need something to climb (but you can get bush varieties)

Also try salad leaves

Best thing to do would be get some plants from market/garden centre and go from there

Be warned you'll get addicted and over run!

munz · 12/06/2007 20:16

ah I don't care am more worried about getting all the stuff and either it not growing, the dogs eating it all/diggin things up, or doing so well that I can't take them when I move next year and end up leaving it all behind.

I never thought about leeks - I guess it's worht buying a book about these things really isn't it? ooh actually I think dad might have one as he used to be a bit of a 'mr tom good' when we were small growing things in the garden , now he prefers plants thou.

do they take a lot of up keep?

right am now thinking, toms, cue, lettuce (possibly?) apple - am assuming can buy a potted tree then take it with me and plant next spring? pots, carrotts, swede, beans/peas, parsnips, leeks - ooh the fun.

poor DH - he's gonna have to make a fenced off area for me

I have apple tree in a pot but it takes a couple of years to fruit so don't worry if it doesn't

munz · 12/06/2007 20:30

will it even if planted in the ground? will seem a shame to buy one this eyar (if I can) plant it in the new house next year, be there for 3 years and not get any fruit from it.

ooh actually will need to look into this properly and make sure I can plant them and also dig out a patch in the garden (I'm assuming I can)

we've been very successful with chillies in pots (grown from seed), and you could do tomatoes in grow-bags. You could sow lettuce, rocket and other salad leaves around the borders of flower beds. Runner beans/ can been grown up canes in pots and are quite prolific.

HTH

Nymphadora · 12/06/2007 20:39

They have tobe quite mature soyou would need a big one and then you wouldn't be able to move it later on

munz · 12/06/2007 20:42

ah right - apple tree is out for the minute then.

chillis - that's an intresting one - I love the idea of window boxes actually.

a green house is a definate must have then esp if things are going into gro bags - does it work the same as weith flowers? only dad brings all of his pots in in the winter/covers them up so is that needed for veg/fruit as well - fruit wise i'm thinking strawberrys, blueberries rhubarb, raspberries. (althou not sure waht I can grow re the weather etc.) deffo need a book me thinks.
