Dark or light grey fence in garden?

We're about to have our new build back garden done and hoping to achieve feel to it.

We have a 6 ft fence all the way round and I need to paint it before the gardener plants some climbers but I can't decide between a dark grey or a lighter grey fence. I've seen lots of nice dark grey fence ideas on Pinterest but wonder if in reality it will be a bit imposing. Any opinions or anyone willing to share pictures of their grey fence? Suggestions of specific shades? Garden is S/w facing.

I've got a light grey fence, I will post a pic but it won't be the best as everything is a bit overgrown and messy at the mo!
I'm no gardener but we have a guy who comes ever two weeks and just keeps everything tidy he's due tomorrow!

Sorry that's not really better now you can just see the white picket!!

holycityzoo · 23/09/2018 17:59

It was Valspar outside wood paint sorry I can't remember the colour.
It actually looks much nicer in real life!

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · 23/09/2018 18:02

It looks great, thanks for posting!

I paint all woodwork in the gardens that I manage black. Everything looks good with it and it is as contemporary as it comes as it never goes out of fashion.

I'm in Australia, with frequently brilliant sunshine, so the darker the fence, the better for contrast.

Crumbelina · 24/09/2018 06:38

I'd definitely agree dark. We painted a brick wall dark grey in our last house and the contrast was fabulous. All the plants looks so green and lush.

Thanks everyone. I'm in Scotland, so bright sunshine is rare... Grin. I keep seeing lots of black/dark grey fences on Pinterest which look amazing but I do worry it might look oppressive. Does it have a tendency to fade?

OP posts:
Molokonono · 24/09/2018 10:56

It doesn't look oppressive. It looks great, even in mid winter when the slightest bit of greenery or colour can be seen against it.

ArfArfBarf · 24/09/2018 11:01

We have a dark grey fence (metal not wood though). It looks great with shades of green so well suited to damper climates with lush greenery. Plus less fading from the sun.

WellTidy · 24/09/2018 11:54

I would go dark. Everything will look great against it, there will be a proper contrast.

Cuprinol urban slate looks amazing on fences. I've used silver birch on a bin store and it looks good but I think I'll go urban slate when it next needs painting.

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · 24/09/2018 14:39

Thanks, looks like a great colour. A gardener has recommended demidekk ultimate to me - pricey, but lasts 10 years. We had considered not painting the fence at all as we hate doing it so much, but I think I can cope if it doesn't need doing for 10 years! Grin

Urban Slate. Lovely colour and not oppressive!

Thank you! We're definitely going with dark. Thanks for the pic FantailsFly - what's your climbing plant? That's next on my list to choose!

FantailsFly · 27/09/2018 19:26

OP - it's evergreen jasmine on the right hand side (lovely but slow growing) and raspberry and blackberry canes in the foreground. Planted them a couple of years ago to get some quick coverage and they're so productive I can't bear to get rid! Idea WAS to replace with something else though once the jasmine gets going....

Crumbelina · 27/09/2018 20:55

That's lovely Fantails! Smile

OP, have attached some pics of my old garden with the dark grey fences/paint (shows up a bit lighter in the pics). You've made the right decision!
