How to plant a small tree?

Hello wise people!

I have a small bushy tree in a pot that is clearly not happy in there (was previously in the garden of our old house but we moved it with us). DH is away and I want to plant the tree out. But I don't know how to do it.

I think I should dig a hole then plant the tree then fill it back in. But how big a hole comparative to the tree? And do I need to put compost in there at all? Or anything specialist?

I have a spade and I can go to the garden centre if need be...!

Thank you!

I think I'm just going to have to get digging and see how I get on!

The advice I have had is
Dig a slightly bigger hole than the pot the tree is in, make sure it’s deep enough
Don’t add any fertiliser
Back fill and water thoroughly
Keep an eye on it and water if needed

Don't break up the bottom of the pit and make sure that you don't plant it any deeper than the root flare.

First, prepare a hole two to three times as wide as the root ball of your tree. Handle the root ball carefully to keep it intact while you place it in the hole. Once it's in, turn it so the best side of the tree is facing the direction you want. With burlapped root balls, cut the twine and remove the burlap. Place the tree carefully into the hole and cover it with soil.
