What is this beautiful plant? Welcoming advice on balcony plants for autumn/winter

I think that this plant, posted below, is possibly one of the most beautiful plants I have seen! Would you know what it's called please?

I took the photo in June, so I imagine that it flowers in the summer only. However I think they would look lovely in the autumn too, do you think they would survive on the balcony during autumn/winter? To flower again in the spring?

I'm also interested in ideas on other similarly beautiful plants for autumn/winter.
Thanks!

Geranium. Not sure about over wintering though.

They won’t survive outside when the frosty weather comes, but you can keep them inside in pots over the winter.
Clip off the dying leaves and flowers, put them in a warm bright spot and water sparingly.
In the late spring, after any danger of frost has past you can put them outside again.

Geranium , can survive down to - 4 but usually doesn't , best survival is to put it inside and water sparingly through the winter , you can take cuttings early spring if inclined

Ivy looks nice in winter though it won't put on much growth in the winter, so what you buy now is how it will stay.

Our geraniums thrive in a sheltered porch over winter. They even keep flowering into December. Tough little buggers. But they're not the variegated leaf kind which might be more delicate.

Beauty is indeed in the eye of the beholder - I can't stand geraniums!!

No to over wintering outside (unless it's a very very mild winter)

Try holly, ivy, Christmas box in the winter. When it gets warm again, bulbs work really well in pots

There's an app called plantsnap that is great for this. Just take a picture of the plant and it tells you what it is!

Not that helpful now I know!

Thank you all for the advice!
I'll go shopping for geranium

OP, I hate to be the bearer of bad news, however your chances of finding any geraniums in garden centres at this time of year are very low, as they're not in season.

I'd try in late spring/early summer next year.

If you like those geraniums, I'd look at cyclamen with red flowers at this time of year (they're just starting to appear in garden centres).

NorthenderNamechanger · 01/09/2018 21:16

That's a particularly pretty geranium! I had it in my old garden and it overwintered well (sheltered zone 10 garden) but didn't stay as pretty. They are super easy to grow from seed. Maybe you could do that next year and have hundreds of them! If you like the leaves, you might like Coleus too. I love it.

NeonMist · 01/09/2018 21:17

Just had a search and saw that the geranium family is very big, and includes pelargonium.
I will try the plant app to see what particular version this is!

The name of this variety is "Vancouver Centennial" if you want to look for it.

NeonMist · 01/09/2018 21:29

Poppins2016 yes cyclamen can cope with a winter.

NorthenderNamechanger yes I love the purple leaves and will check out coleus too

Thank you NanTheWiser ! Definitely after this particular one! Have you grown it yourself?

I have NeonMist, many years ago, though.
