Has anyone grown primroses from seed ? What type of soil have you got? When's the best time to plant and best place for them?

Strangely enough I had just looked this up for candlestick primula.
I have grown primroses before, sowing them on top of seed compost in trays. They germinated in the warmth, on a windowsill. I think they need warmth over winter before putting out after the frost. They then seemed to become hardy Perennials.
The primulas need some cold to germinate, so I’m experimenting!
Once established the primroses seem to self seed all over the place.

Thank you JT I'll try that, do you have clayey soil or sandy\light?

I’ve got clay soil, and my primroses and cowslips have self-seeded all over the place. It’s easy to transplant the babies wherever you like.

Ah Jumbilee I have very light sandy, alkili soil so it 'll be more difficult to grow them in the garden. I might try in a large pot. I love cowslips too but only one has ever just arrived in my garden ! I didn't grow it!

My soil is basically clay, but I made new flower beds and filled them with new compost and manure.

Yes, I've got a load of fine leylandii chippings, from one we had to have felled, which would help with 'acidifying ' my soil I hope!
