Windows sill herbs

Could anyone advise on growing herbs on the window sill (indoors)
Supermarket herbs seem to last 2 minutes so I was hoping to grow my own. What sort of pots do I need? Soil type? Can I put them in a box together or are they better off in separate pots?
How often do they need watered?
I was hoping to grow coriander, basil and maybe one or two more. Where do you all buy them from? Garden centre or can you plant the supermarket ones?

Thanks in advance.

Watching with interest. I have found that I can usually get the supermarket ones to last a good few months if I repot them into a bigger pot, prune them regularly and feed them plant food. I also watched a really good YouTube video about growing basil. I will try to find it.

Hope someone more knowledgeable than me will be along with more advice!

Also I had a supermarket flat leaf parsley plant that was on the brink of death so I put it outside and forgot about it. It looks amazing now!

Here is the basil video. Sorry for posting three times on your thread Blush

I grow coriander and small leaved basil from seed, 6" pot, multipurpose compost, about 20 seeds per pot. Coriander bolts easily, and I use quite a lot so I either need to have several pots on the go, planted once every couple of weeks or still buy some. Basil makes a lovely compact plant and lasts all summer. We don't have a kitchen windowsill so I start them in the greenhouse then keep them on the patio. The basil in this pic was grown from seed this year. Again if you use a lot eg pesto you might need more than one pot.

I have sage, mint, chives, marjoram, thyme and parsley in larger patio pots. The chives live forever but I replace the others as needed every couple of years with garden centre rather than supermarket plants.
