Can I just divide this pot plant into two?

I have this pot plant in my room and it is doing well, despite being in a basement so relatively restricted in light.

Could I simply divide it in two to enable it to keep on growing and expanding? I got it through Freecycle so have no idea what kind of plant it is, so no idea if it will just divide nicely under the soil, or whether it might have a single tuber or similar?

Thanks

I can't see your pic on the desktop, so have looked on iPad, and it looks like a Calathea. Yes, you can divide these - they usually grow from underground rhizomes, and the best way is to unpot it, then slice through the rootstock with a sharp kitchen knife, repotting the separate sections.
They don't have high light requirements, but some species do like a humid atmosphere.
I have a gorgeous Calathea tricolour in my hall, which is many years old, and gets very little direct light, but it seems to thrive!

Fantastic! Thanks so much - I think you're spot on with calathea as the leaves do have a reddish underside.

Do you think it would work in a bathroom? Again, only sun through a frosted window, and that is off a patio area surrounded by tall buildings.

Could I divide the rhizome into more than two if it appeared healthy?

I have had so little luck with getting plants to survive in or out of this flat that I'm getting a bit over-excited!

Bathroom is probably fine, you'll have to try it and see. And yes, you can probably divide it into several sections - when you unpot it you should be able to judge roughly how many divisions you can make.

What is the smallest size you'd go for? About 2" Square? No idea really.

Thanks so much for helping me. Clueless at this!

No, I'd leave them a bit bigger than that, so several stems for each division, and about 3" pots at least.

Right - done!

Divided it into 3: half, and two uneven quarters. Hopefully at least one will take!

Thanks again.

You definitely can. I have one and have split it loads over the years. It grows back just fine and soonish, as long as you use good compost and feed it.
