Slugs. Is it possible to hate them any more than I do?

Evil slimy things that are feasting on every delicious plant in the allotment. I hate them. I hate them. I hate them. There! I feel better now.

I do the beer thing and it really does work.

Amazing and very satisfying to see them
floating around in the beer instead of munching on my green beans.

My nan goes out every night when its dark, with a torch and a plastic bag.

She gets as many slugs as she can find, ties up the bag and slings it in the bin.

'Orrible things they are.

I hate slugs even more than the cat that craps on my lawn! I loathe the slimy little buggers with a passion, - they make me feel physically ill!! And they have eaten my runner beans - bastards!

Desiderata · 07/06/2007 13:26

Pooooooooooooor sluggies

They haven't got much going for them, have they? You would have thought that if you were destined, as a creature, to be ugly, slimy, and avaricious, you would at least have been given the wherewithal to run away!

I'll try the beer thing. Are we talking loads of pots? Or one per bed?

Do you really hate me ????

Have I said something wrong ????

Would it be better if I wasa spider [hmm???

TnOgu · 07/06/2007 14:15

Here, have a pint of beer.

TnOgu · 07/06/2007 14:18

Nkf - I would put out as many little pots or flat foil trays with beer in as you can for a whole bed of plants.

petunia · 07/06/2007 14:18

I did just one pot near to newly-planted bedding plants and near where I knew they were hiding. It's probably where I got it wrong, just using a few and should have used more. I got quite a few slugs and snails but there seem to be a stubborn few that never find the beer traps and they're the ones that carry on chompsing!
Poor Madslug feeling got at! If it makes you feel better, I do leave the slugs that I found in my composter. I know they're doing some good in there!

bozza · 07/06/2007 14:20

Is that right? I have been killing the slugs. But putting the snails on the compost heap? But will they escape? It is a bin.

petunia · 07/06/2007 14:46

I haven't been finding them and putting them in the bin, just leaving the ones that I found when I went to put stuff in there a week or 2 back. I only suppose they're doing some good in there because I heard that slugs and snails are good for the garden in the winter months, eating dead stuff etc. More about slugs and snails here (I liked the bit about killing methods "for the more ruthless gardener"!)

My mum goes out at dawn and collects them, like elfinblast's nan.

And then she tells me (on the phone) "I've just been out in the garden collecting slugs and now I'm having breakfast" and I PMSL!
