Grey water

Looking for some advice please. Due to the hot weather I have started syphoning off bath water into our water butt to water the grass. Can I do the same with the my washing machine and dishwasher? I am thinking of just putting the draining pipe into a bucket under my sink - but it seems too simple. What am I missing or can I just do this? No money to start buying gadgets or anything. Literally have a hose pipe and some buckets. Also, only watering the grass - no veg or anything. Any advice welcome please, thanks!

Washing machines and dishwasher water has chemicals and salts. I’m afraid neither are good for plants.
Soapy water is fine.

What about the water from a condenser dryer, is that any good?

In hotter climates watering turf with grey water is common. The rule is use more rather than less, as this pushes the salts through the soil better. Once we get heavy rain ourselves, the salts are then flushed from the topsoil. If you are able to let any waste water stand for a day or two, the bulk of soap, salt Tec will have settled out.

I think the water from a condenser dryer can be used as long as you don't use any form of fabric conditioner.

Monty don discussed this on his programme the other night, you can use washing up and bath water but not washing machine water due to the chemicals. Don't know about condenser water, maybe it's on his websiteGrin

I always save the water from our condenser dryer and use it in our steam iron. Much better than the lime tap water which over time wrecks the iron. Condenser dryer water hasn't got any chemicals in and would be ok to use on the garden.

Thanks all. I have been continuing to use the bath water just on the grass. Not so much now the rain has returned though!
Was really shocked by how much water we use when showering though
