And what do I do about it?

The first photo shows the flower, the second the brown spots on the leaves. They are also on the stems.

clematis wilt ?

YearOfYouRemember · 18/07/2018 14:27

What's that? This is the first time ive had this on any of my flowers. I'm about to go out but I'll google more once home. Thank you.

Well firstly, that isn't a Clematis, it's a mallow, probably Lavatera x clementinii rosea ( or a similar plant). And secondly it appears to have been hit by Rust, Hollyhock rust to be precise, as they are closely related. Not sure if there is any treatment, but all affected leaves should be removed, bagged and binned.

ha ha, god I'm useless at this gardening lark!!

YearOfYouRemember · 18/07/2018 16:47

Well it's what it said on the label..

Then it was wrongly labelled...

Trethew · 18/07/2018 16:57

Agree with Nan. That’s no clematis. It’s lavatera with rust. Bad luck

YearOfYouRemember · 18/07/2018 17:14

Ok. Just went out to have a look and give a prune. Have found two potential labels.

Well done Trethew and Nan.

My MIL told me to squirt it all with fairy liquid and water but I've pruned all the stuff with the spots on. Left with about six flowers.

I feel it's my fault. It grew a lot faster and bigger than we expected and I think it got very damp underneath.

Any advice gratefully received.

Thanks all.

Nan is right.

Remove and dispose of all affected foliage because spores can linger in the soil, don't let it get into your compost if you have any.

As a preventative you could try spraying with Roseclear which contains a general antifungal.

YearOfYouRemember · 18/07/2018 18:49

There won't be much left once I remove all infected stems etc so it might be better to dig it out and get a new one.

I'd give it a chance and see how it gets on. It should grow back.

YearOfYouRemember · 19/07/2018 12:28

I will. I've got a few more branches to prune and really it's going to end up with about two left and I've pruned it right back so wondering it I've killed it off. You've probably gathered I'm a novice gardener.

UPDATE

I pruned all the infected branches away and can not believe it worked. I have healthy disease free branches and leaves now and look forward to flowers again. Thanks for all your help.

Good news! Just be aware that you might get Rust attacks every year, as the spores may well be in the surrounding ground.

YearOfYouRemember · 08/09/2018 16:15

Ok. Thank you. I'll keep a close eye on it. I noticed today I have a plant which seems to be growing fruit with black and rust spots on them so I have started picking them off just in case. I can't see how they'd be flowers so they can go.

Update

Rust again Sad.

They are only relatively short-lived plants anyway, Mine have only lasted 5-6 years. Maybe the best thing would be to cut it back to ground level now, clear away absolutely all debris including fallen leaves, and wait till spring. If it gets it again next year, then maybe it will have to go.

(Don't put diseased foliage on the compost heap, throw it away altogether).

YearOfYouRemember · 21/10/2018 19:37

It was new last year. I'll prune it some more tomorrow. Thank you.

Mallow is a bugger for carrying rust whether you can see it or not. It will pass it on to rust sensitive plants so watch what you plant with it.
