Watering pots while away

WipsGlitter · 04/07/2018 13:11

I've no one to water my pots while I'm away for five days. Is there anything I can do to try and keep them alive?

I was thinking of absolutely soaking them before I go and feeding them.

Any other suggestions?

Don't feed them because you don't want them to grow (and therefore need more water) while you're away. Move them all together into a shady, cool (relatively) place and water well. You can also stand them in a growbag tray that has gravel and water in it.

Are you near a wilko's, if so they do big plant pot saucers. Might be worth a go.

Do they have any mulch on top? Grit, gravel etc slow water evaporation and help to suppress weeds as well.

Indoor or outdoor. You can set up some sort of self watering device. Either a diy with bottles wedged in the soil or a drip watering system.
If outside I would put all pots together in a shady spot then set up a sprinkler on a timer or a drip irrigation on a hose timer.

A couple of years ago I ordered some spikes that go into 2 L plastic water bottles. Once attached they went into the soil and slowly drip fed the water into the pot.
They were quite successful, a few £s from eBay.

put them in the bath with the plug in, add about 1/2 inch of water, they'll survive for 5 days.

Stand them in trays filled with water. Or for large pots chop the bottoms of plastic drinks bottles, stick the mouth of the bottle in the soil and fill with water.

They're outdoor pots so not sure some of these would work!

If you have a hose and sprinkler you can buy a timer off Amazon £14.39 and set it to go one once or twice a day. That is what we are doing.

You can make your own self-waterer--- davesgarden.com/guides/articles/view/2563
