I have an enormous bush of the yellow plant in the first picture, looks lovely in flower but mostly not! Wondering what it is so I can see if I can successfully prune it back. Also, two quite pretty flowers in the next picture but are they weeds?
Not had a garden before so would love help identifying these!

First one is a hypericum I think.

I want to say St. John's Wort for the first (that would be the common name obviously) but now I am doubting it.
despite the fact I can't remember the name, I do know a lot about it, and have 2 in the garden.

It is a useful bush as once it starts flowering it will give you pretty yellow flowers all summer until the first frost.
It is as tough as old boots, you could chop 2/3 of it down and it would spring back. It is used in many park/roundabout settings when looking for a strong plant that will give some flowers.

I like it, because it is easy and flowers a long time. But others are a bit snobby about it, because it is common.
You may find if you chop it, it flowers less next year, not sure if it flowers on this year's growth or not.

The other two, the orange one looks like a type of marigold?
The blue I also have, it isn't a weed, in fact I think it might be a bulb. It appears out of nowhere, flowers and then vanishes. Which is a problem if you need to dig the bed over!

Thank you both! It would be ironic if it’s St John’s wort as I buy loads of that in Holland and Barrat Wink

Yes, the first one is hypericum, also known as StJohn's Wort. I think the orangy yellow one is a weed, not sure about the blue one.

steppemum · 03/07/2018 17:46

just googled it and it is indeed St John's wort, and the latin name is hypericum.

FearOfFrogs · 03/07/2018 17:55

The blue one may be Chionodoxia

FearOfFrogs · 03/07/2018 17:56

or Isotoma axillaris

NanTheWiser · 03/07/2018 18:00

Blue one is probably one of the Campanulas.

NOTalantitchmarsh · 03/07/2018 18:04

I won’t dig any of them up then Smile Apparently I can make tea with the hypericum, though I would proceed with caution!
Thanks for all the suggestions. My DM was my go-to plant expert but she’s not here anymore, so it’s lovely to have others to ask

The orange flower in the second photo looks like the wildflower Pilosella fox and cubs.

by the way, St Johns Wort is sold in herbal shops etc as a home remedy, but it is pretty potent stuff. If you take it as a supplement, you should always tell your GP when they prescribe medicine, and it interacts with some common meds very adversely

NOTalantitchmarsh · 05/07/2018 00:50

Thank you Steppemum - I'll maybe give the tea a miss!
And for all the knowledgeable comments. Maybe one day I'll know my marigolds from my chiondoxias!
