Honey locust Sunburst tree for small garden?

I am looking at the above tree for our small garden to give us some privacy, ornamental trees says it grows to 5m in 20 years.
Does anyone know if this tree is suitable for a small garden?

To be honest I think shrubs are better in small gardens. My garden is small and I keep shrubs fence level, a neighbour has a massive tree in his (small) garden which blocks out loads of my sunlight.

Facts About Sunburst Honey Locust Trees. This tree attains a mature height of 30 to 40 feet, with a spread a bit less than that.

Google is saying it gets much bigger than 5 metres. Its not a tree for a small garden.

Back to the drawing board then! I think we will go with a small birch tree.
I would rather have trees and my neighbour has raised their garden level so we now have no privacy at all so shrubs aren't going to do it!

Have you thought of a Rowen? They are pretty and legend has it that they guard against evil spirits!

ThatIsNachoCheese · 28/06/2018 18:42

We did consider a rowan actually, I can't remember why I decided against it!
I didn't know they ward against evil spirits, that's a good reason to look again Wink thanks

How is one tree going to give you privacy?

If I could have just one tree, I think it might be an Amelanchier x Grandiflora Ballerina.

Or a Paper Bark Maple.

Or a Pitmaston Pineapple Apple tree.

Or a Eucalyptus.

Or...well...not a Rowan! Too municipal. Have something interesting!

Well we are hoping to get a prunus royal burgundy as tree no. 1 so we need one to join it!
We were looking at an amelanchier robin hill.
I've looked at too many trees so now I feel like my head will explode!

My first thing with trees is - make it work for it's space.

If it isn't edible, beautiful or useful, don't have it.

JT05 · 29/06/2018 07:29

Don’t grow a eucalyptus, unless you plan to prune it every year. They are fast growing and have a wide root spread.
I have just had one cut down, I couldn’t believe how quickly it grew. Unless of course you want a quick growing tree and it’s a good distance from the house.
They are pretty.

TellsEveryoneRealFacts · 29/06/2018 07:55

I have a rule which is quite a good one in my opinion - as soon as the trunk gets thick enough to not be able to get my hands around it - i hoof it out and replace with another tree. Or coppice it and use the wood for firewood. You can coppice a eucalyptus if you choose the right variety. Which means a thicker spread of branches offering more privacy if that is what is needed.

I like changing things and have a small garden in a conservation area; which means that if it becomes too big, it needs planning permission to prune...so I keep them small and change them about regularly.

perhapstomorrow · 29/06/2018 08:04

Definitely don t get a eucalyptus. We have one in a big garden and it is massive.

MariaMadita · 29/06/2018 10:59

How about holly? Obviously depends on the kind of holly but 5m is pretty much the maximum I believe.

Or maybe a small evergreen tree? (Good for year round privacy and a dash of green in winter...)

ThatIsNachoCheese · 29/06/2018 11:18

We did originally think about a red robin but I didn't love it so disregarded it. I've struggled to find an evergreen that I like so any suggestions welcome! I'm not a massive fan of holly.
So far I think we have narrowed it down to:
Birch trinity college
Sorbus Kashmir
Amelanchier robin hill
Thanks for all your help and suggestions!
