Is this a Clematis?

This plant has self-seeded itself by the front wall of the house - I wasn't sure what it was, but thought I'd let it grow for a while.

It's clearly a climber, and it looks very like a clematis to me, but no flowers or buds as yet. If it turns out to be decent I'll give it a trellis!

What do you think?

Could be old man's beard? Particularly if self-seeded.

Hmm...I guess I have to wait until it bursts into flower (or grows a beard).

It's certainly growing like a weed!

@Tiddlywinks63 - I just looked up Old Man's Beard, and I think you're right. That's why it looks like a clematis.

I'm a bit alarmed to read "Though it can be cut back in early spring, it will still shoot out by 5m and more over the summer. This is not a climber for small gardens or those who like everything fussily neat and formal."

Also "the plant can grow to a height of 40 feet or more." Shock Not a good choice for the front wall of my bungalow, then.

Other clematis set seeds too. I’d wait and see what happens when it flowers before killing it

I carefully nurtured what I thought was a seedling clematis until it was about 15' tall - that was Old Man's Beard!
Good luck!

Grin It is growing verrry quickly. There's a shoot which grabs me round the legs every time I go through the front door.

If it were a polite little clematis (the sort you cut down almost to the ground each spring) I'd let it stay, but it isn't being very polite right now.
