Companion planting

I'm trying to grow carrots in tubs (garden has very heavy clay soil with loads of stones)and had read that planting leeks with them help against carrot fly.
Now I doubt I can grow leeks in tubs too but does anyone know if chives would work.
Going on the fact they're both from similar families.

definitely
and they like garlic too, which you could pop in to your pot at the same time. They say you should plant in late autumn but I've popped cloves in the spring too and they do just fine.

Ah never thought of garlic. Did you just pop clovess from you kitchen in or is there a seed clove you have to get.

Just pop a clove in the ground, not too far down. I've always used them straight from the kitchen - especially if it is a nice strong flavoured one - but don't know if the ones sold in uk shops might be from F2 hybrids (so may no produce a decent plant the second time around). But it's worth a try. In any case, if it is mainly to protect your carrot, then you will have the desired effect (repelling carrot fly) even if they don't turn out to be massive garlic later in the year.
Good luck.
Personally am a bit worried that my carrot has decided not to grow...
