I have a west facing area in my side return. The area is mainly concrete, but there is a narrow border and a fence behind that. I can see the whole area from my dining room window. At the moment, there are various cotoneaster, a holly, bergenia and some ground cover geraniums in there. There is also a grapevine. I did have lots of different allium too, but they’re pretty much at an end now. Although west facing, the area is part shaded by the house, so not much sun.

I am looking to plant something quite long flowering, with height, as I loved looking at all the allium. I had loads and that is the look I am trying to replicate. I am looking at it quite a lot as it is so visible from the dining room, which is a through room for us. I had thought about astrantia Roma, but I think I am too late. Another thought I had was Rosa Madame Alfred carriere.

All suggestions welcome!

I planted Astrantia in June last year and even though they were quite small, they flowered for ages. Astrantia Roma is not particularly high though. There are other varieties of Astrantia that are a bit higher, but I don’t think they flower quite as long.

If it’s quite shady, you could also consider Japanese Anemones. Most flower later in the season (late August onwards), but there are some varieties that flower on and off over a longer period of time. Purple swan is a particularly nice variety and quite compact.

And I’d definitely consider growing something that flowers against that fence! If it gets at least 4 hours of sun, a shade loving rose and clematis combination could work. Rosa Madame Alfred Carriere might be a bit big for a fence though, but if you look on the David Austin website you can find other, smaller, climbing roses that don’t mind a bit of shade.

I grow Rose Strawberry Hill as a climber, with clematis Madame Edouard Andre on a wall that is in shade until 3 pm. Those two together produce months worth of flowers 😁
