Gravelling a garden

I am looking to put gravel down in place of my front lawn but I have no idea where to start.

Do I need to take the grass up first or can I put matting or plastic over it to kill it off? Is it best to use the weed control matting or plastic sheeting?

My understanding is that you need to do the following
1, remove all the turf and all the roots, so a good 8-10cm and level and compact soil ( this is to stop any growth and also to stop it rotting and going uneven as it rotted away under the matting and gravel)
2, lay a strong weed prevention matting that is water permeable over the area cleared, (this will discourage any grow through of grass you missed when removing the turfs. It needs to be water permeable otherwise rain will collect and you will get a gravelly smelly mess
3, lay down the gravel around 6/7 cm thick evenly all over membrane and take level. ( this will ensure it's deep enough to stay even when used etc)
4, be aware that forever more you will be removing weeds from the gravel as they are mostly wind blown and bird poo spread.
5, Have a large Gin and relax looking at your gravelled garden Wine

  1. It will resemble a gigantic cats' litter tray.

@rightthingwrongtime Will you be driving in this gravel? If so you need a different approach
