We are buying a house with a once much lived garden that's got a bit out of hand, we are new to gardening and I'm struggling to find out what these plants (huge overgrown tree thing) is could anyone help?

Number 3 looks quite like Weigela.

FreshsatsumaforDd · 07/06/2018 19:39

And 8 are irises.

MissCherryCakeyBun · 07/06/2018 19:42

Thank you that’s a great start

Is 5 some sort of salvia? Probably not..

WelshPooch · 07/06/2018 20:21

No. 4 looks like Photinia - Red Robin

JT05 · 07/06/2018 23:52

1 looks like pheasant berry. 3 is Weigela, you can prune the flowering stems when the flowers are over, but don’t prune the non flowering stems. They’re where the flowers will be next year.

Halsall · 07/06/2018 23:57

Agree with JT05, 1 is Leycesteria aka pheasant berry.

user1494670108 · 08/06/2018 10:50

3 is weirdos, I have two that have responded well to hard pruning- they've come back pretty quickly and flowered the following year

JellyMouldJnr · 08/06/2018 19:30

Number 2 might be a bay tree. Break off a leaf and see if smells like a bay leaf.

friendlyflicka · 08/06/2018 19:32

6 is a fuchsia I think

Halsall · 08/06/2018 23:47

It's hard to see the photos in enough detail really, but 7 might possibly be a hypericum, Rose of Sharon - if so it should have yellow flowers eventually.

I don't know about 2 being a bay, Jelly - the leaves don't look dark and glossy enough to me...bigger individual pics would help, OP!

friendlyflicka · 09/06/2018 08:35

2 definitely isn't a bay. Does it have any buds or old flowers?

MissCherryCakeyBun · 09/06/2018 09:21

Thanks so so much ladies for the amazing help here it's brilliant to know I have some nice established shrubs to work with

The tree thing is not a bay ( I have one in the current house) sadly the tree ( and garden) is 3 hours drive from our current house so for now these are the only pics I have

The mystery bush/tree/triffid is this one

The problem is that you can only upload 6 pictures a day 😞
This is no7

I'm not sure now about no. 7! It looks more like a spirea in the bigger picture. Over to someone else to have a go, I think....sorry!

friendlyflicka · 10/06/2018 20:29

I am not a great plant identifier, I am sorry. But my feeling about the no 2 would be to watch, see if it produces anything, and then cut right back.

MissCherryCakeyBun · 10/06/2018 22:05

I'm thinking that's a great plan @friendlyflicka it's far to big for where it is in the garden and we have loads of work being done so can get rid of the trimmings easily

That is the first time, I think, I have been useful in all my years of Mumsnet. Thanks very much
