Hi all - we moved house in 2016 and this summer DH is getting very keen on spending time making our garden look amazing!
I would like to get him something practical for Father's Day but also not too boring .. anyone got any bright ideas?
Got knee pads on my list but am a bit lost apart from that as it's all new to me.
TIA

What about an amazing climbing rose - a David Austen or Peter Beales are the best

If he doesn’t already have them, good quality basic tools (Secateurs, shears, fork, gloves) make the job more enjoyable! Not inspired but I wish someone had bought them for me when I started.

I would second the good quality Hand tools. I started enjoying gardening last year and this is what I use loads

Kneeler
Gloves
Secateurs
Trowel
Fork
Bulb planter

As it is a Father's Day gift, whAt about plants that bear you DC names? E.g. If you have a daughter called Elizabeth, you can buy pittosporum Elizabeth, which is very pretty, variegated leaf with a pink tinge. Or Photinia Louise is a red, green and pink evergreen shrub.

Google and see if anything works for you. There are many, many roses and shrubs named after people.

Some good quality, stainless steel tools but I would let him choose his own if you decide to buy a larger piece of kit; spades, forks, rakes etc are not all the same.

A potting bench and some accessories?

TERFragetteCity · 06/06/2018 21:38

Decent gloves that you can move your hands about in - these are our go-to garden gloves unless working with spiky stuff www.thesafetysupplycompany.co.uk/p/9152735/high-quality-cow-grain-leather-glove-with-cotton-lining---conforms-to-en388-2133---pair---ht-dg-ycg.html?gclid=Cj0KCQjwjN7YBRCOARIsAFCb934KPfIwZPERDI2goG7dw0QcE1meq6RpWH2dDftdTkXf4Rd3lrkVnZsaAmaGEALw_wcB
Felco secateurs
A swoe for weeding
A pitchfork if he wants to do lots of composting
A shredder for mulching
A rechargeable mower
A tonne of cow shit if you have rubbish soil that you want to improve.

Great ideas thanks am researching now !
Love the idea of a tonne of cow shit - that would make quite a statement !

A deckchair to sit and admire his efforts?

TERFragetteCity · 07/06/2018 22:30

In the world of gardening, you are nobody until you have had a tonne of manure as a birthday present.

Some good gardening books. I love these little RHS guides, brilliant for when you’re trying to plant up a tricky spot. They have a few of these guides:

I second (or third!!) good basic tools. My parents bought me a pair of Felco secateurs and they are one of my most treasured possessions!
