Marguerites in window box dying! (Pics)

I planted two almost identical window boxes last week. One is flourishing, the other is dying. Same amount of water, both getting same weather. What might be happening, do you think, and can I save the wilting/yellowing Marguerite do you think?

The healthy one has a different variety of Bidens in it, and the dying one also has lobelia at the edges, but I can’t think that would make much difference?

Is one getting more sun, thus drying out more? They can also wilt if over watered.

JessieMcJessie · 04/06/2018 19:45

That’s the big dilemma isn’t it JT Smile. If I think kt’s Getting too much sun then I should water it more I suppose, but if that’s not the problem then I could kill it by over-watering?

They are on two sides of a bay window that gets full afternoon sun, and I’d say that the big (dying) one is a bit more angled straight into the sun, but only marginally. I had hoped that they’d be good in that position as I understood that they liked full sun.

They don’t like being waterlogged, but they dry out very quickly in free draining compost, and once they’ve had a serious wilt they never seem to recover properly. I’ve given up on them

JessieMcJessie · 04/06/2018 20:26

That’s a shame Trethew. They were brand new from the garden centre at 7.99 a pop as well! I was hoping they were idiot proof but I guess not.

I bought one last week and mine has gone from gorgeous to ghastly over the weekend!

We've had some bad rain so thinking it's been waterlogged.

Hopefully they'll all pick back up, they are beautiful aren't they

I had lots last summer (from the year before) but lost them all to the frost/snow Sad

JessieMcJessie · 04/06/2018 21:43

We didn’t really have much rain over the weekend and it was really hot, so unless I was over-zealous with the hose on this one compared to its neighbour, maybe it’s too much sun.

I work in a retail nursery. Marguerites are a pain to keep smart. We have high wastage on them

JessieMcJessie · 04/06/2018 22:55

Ah now the truth is coming out Trethew. Smile And they looked so lovely on the big display as well! I was duped!

I have come on here because I was given 2 big daisy plants for my birthday mid May. Sadly both seem to be dying already. I have kept them watered but there have been days when they have been waterlogged (awful rain storms) and other days when they have dried out. Not sure if they are dying from too much water or too much sun!

JessieMcJessie · 06/06/2018 20:17

I feel your pain Tumpy. My unhealthy one is on its way out i fear. Though the healthy one looks great!

I've cut mine right back and noticed some new buds. Mine is still in the plastic plant pot so I removed it and found it still very wet...hoping it picks up when it dries out a bit

Anyone else noticed any improvement?

JessieMcJessie · 07/06/2018 23:21

I took mine out of the window box - roots did seem quite damp. I planted it in a bed in the back garden to see if there is any life left in it. If I weee to cut it back I’m not sure what I’d cut though as all the leaves are wilted.
The healthy one is still very healthy indeed.

I have repotted my biggest one and degraded it. Am hoping this does the trick. My smaller one is looking very brown, not sure it can be saved. Am thinking I might cut that one right back too and see what happens. It seems to have died really quickly. A week ago it was looking great. I also have a lovely hydrangea on its way out so not doing too well.
