Bindweed - is this my life now?

One end of the garden had a growing bindweed infestation but has recently been dug out and paved over. I thought that would solve the issue, but it seems like every day I find a new patch of bindweed in another part of the garden! I've been trying to dig it out by the root asap but I'm feeling a bit worn down by it all - if I can grab half an hour in the garden I don't want to spend that time digging bindweed every time! Anyone have any neat solutions? It's driving me mad!!!

Unless you want to spend the greater part of your life digging it up, I think you’ll need to use a systemic control; a heavy-duty weed killer applied to the foliage that will kill it down to the roots - something like Roundup Ultra.

I let it all gather and grow up a bamboo can and then rip it all out once a week or so. Although DD wants me to let it take over the whole garden since she heard it is also called grandfather-pop-out-of-bed Confused

A bamboo cane, that is.

Ah that's useful thanks. I tried weedol last year but it made no difference. I can cope with digging it out in the veg patch but blitzing the rest would be amazing if I can find something that works!

You need to use a weedkiller that goes down into the roots. Like ground elder i think it is a weed that you never get rid of completely but you can keep on top if it.

Neolara · 31/05/2018 11:12

You need to roundup it. Drench it, then leave it to die before digging up.

Oh yes we have plenty of ground elder too but I've managed to keep it more or less contained in a 'wild' part of the garden. Although I am worried it's choking out the other wild plants and flowers. I've ordered roundup ultra and a sprayer and will blitz it next weekend!

Why on earth would you use poison to deal with bindweed?

Pull up as much as you can and then use white vinegar in a spray.
You will be able to keep it under control without introducing that toxicity into the local ecosystem.

I've had a great deal of success by letting it grow, then bundling it up in a sandwich bag and spraying copiously with weedol and leaving for a week until completely dead. You have to make sure you get all the leaves. I put the bag in a flower pot so I remember where it is.

I second Fluffytail's motion. Only with roundup. Neutralizes as it hits the soil, so you aren't actually spreading toxicity. Just getting shut of a pesky little plant strangler.

I've got rid of all my bindweed without using any chemicals.
This is a high bindweed area, it's everywhere. I don't dig out the roots as they are endless and deep and are under all my established plants.
I just pull up any bindweed that I see and it weakens the roots until it disappears. After a couple of years of doing this the only bindweed i find now is that that grows under the fence from next doors "wildlife" garden.
You need to get out there and do a little bit every day.
