Well, a viewing booked in! I am very excited. Have no outdoor space at all now, and the site is only 10 minutes walk from home.

Soil around here is clay, although we are in the SE so constant water logging isn’t as much of an issue as it might be elsewhere.

So, what questions should I be asking when I go to the viewing? It sounds like several plots are available so I may get to choose. What would you look for?

Get the one nearest a tap! Also check for things like security of the site, any signs of vandalism and general state of the surrounding sites. I'd also see if there are trees overhanging the plot as it means birds and leaves falling on everything!

Congrats! I'd love one but I'm realistic enough to know that I'd struggle keeping it in good condition. So I just remain jealous of those that have one and can produce lovely fruit and veg. Grin

Great tip about surrounding trees.

I’ve had a look on google earth - the site is quite long and thin with two ‘branches’ of path and allotments either side. All the sites seem to have the longest side facing south, which seems like a good arrangement. Trees randomly interspersed.

If you have a choice, look at the immediate neighbouring plots; if they’re well-kept you won’t get as many weed seeds germinating in your bit.
