I was certain it was: en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robinia_pseudoacacia but it's flowering now and I've clearly misidentified it!

I think you are right. I have Robinia Friday and it looks the same.

Izzywigs · 22/05/2018 12:06

Bloody auto-correct Robonia Frisa

Izzywigs · 22/05/2018 12:07

Or even Robinia Frisia. Hurrah, too much gardening has given me fat fingers

MrsLettuce · 22/05/2018 12:11

Thanks izzy. I was convinced of that too but the flowers look like catkins rather than the pea-flower like robina flowers I'm finding online Confused

But, whatever it's name, it's stunning tree and the bees are crazy for it!

Here's an even more zoomed in photo of the flowers - each bunch is about an inch long.

Interesting. I'm now pretty sure it really can't be a robins- Our tree is huge but the leaves are much smaller than yours has. We moved here last winter so I don't know if it produces any sort of seed. Ho hum

I did ask the sellers what sort of tree it was but despite loving it for the 30 years they lived here they hadn't a clue what it might beBiscuit

How about Gleditsia triacanthos 'Sunburst'? It's very similar to Robinia, but a smaller growing tree.

MrsLettuce · 22/05/2018 12:48

Oh yes Nan, I think you might have it!

Although they say that stays small and ours is Massive. Proper tree sized - the 3rd photo I posted was taken from my attic window! But, the flowers are very similar and the leaves look right too.

The buds match Gleditsia (from Google). Robinias can attain massive size, and in age, branches can be brittle and dangerous.

MrsLettuce · 23/05/2018 09:21

Thanks again Nan. It does look more like Gleditsia, I agree. I'm still not quite sure though. It'll be interesting to see what it does about seeding.

I noticed this morning that there's something going on at the tips of the upper branches, not sure what thoughConfused It could be another sort of buds or just more leaves, although the rest of the leaves didn't have that red tinge as they were emerging
