Azalea or Rhododendron?

There's loads flowering around now, all different colours, which are they and what's the difference?
I thought they needed lime soil (or something) but they seem to be copious so I'm hoping I could grow them successfully

Azalea or Rhododendron?

Looks like an azelea to me. Lots of little buds close together to make the look of a larger flower like the rhododendron is.

That’s a rhododendron

Trethew · 18/05/2018 18:03

Azaleas (both the deciduous and evergreen Japanese form) are rhododendrons too. The deciduous azaleas are usually yellow/orange and fragrant and are varieties of Rhododendron luteum. The evergreen azaleas, though still rhododendrons, are usually called Japanese azaleas. They are lower growing, have small dark leaves and smothered in flowers.

and they need lime-free soul

I thought this was a baby name thread but then realised it was posted in gardening 😂😂

😂😂😂

Like camellias, they thrive in acidic soil. Moisture an added bonus.

The gardenista article has lovely inspiring pictures. www.gardenista.com/posts/garden-visit-memories-of-daphne-du-maurier-manderley-mystery-novel-rebecca/

Oh, and that looks like a rhododendron to me, azaleas have smaller leaves and smaller flowers (in my garden at least) n

Yup, another one who thought it was a baby name thread!

Definitely a rhododendron in your photo. Azaleas have smaller leaves, and the flowers are more individual (and prolific) not like the dome shape of rhododendrons.
