Grossed out by slugs. On the LAWN fgs

I have searched a read a few very helpful topics on MN regarding managing your personal slug population. I now have shivers crawling up my spine (at least, I hope they are shivers).

Recently moved and in the last house, with a much bigger garden backing onto fields, I can hardly remember SEEING a slug, let alone worrying about it. Now, I have just popped out into our modest back garden and - my god - they are mooching all over the lawn. Is there a reason they do not overpopulate some places? How the heck am I going to mow the lawn?!!! Help, I'm so grossed out by this. I can't bear to go out at dusk picking them up - no no no. Do NOT want to catch ds picking one up or squashing one underfoot, oh sick making.

So, how many did you get???

merlotmama · 24/05/2007 22:03

DSs suggest a blow torch. That would totally frazzle them and leave very little disgusting residue.

merlotmama · 24/05/2007 22:09

You will gather slug/snail massacring is a family hobby here on the Merlot estate.

We were in Holland on holiday when DS2 was 4 yrs. when we went out for a walk by some ditches he kept pointing out the slugs (those huge black ones with grooves down their backs)saying "Mum, a snail, kill it quick!" Vigilant even on holiday.

Desiderata · 24/05/2007 22:12

Strewth! That's appealing, encouraging small children to kill creatures.

I have to say, the OP make me roar. Slugs ... on the lawn!

That's where they live. It's called nature.

Walnutshell · 24/05/2007 22:20

Desiderata - umm, can I get away with saying I was being tongue in cheek? Nope, oh well - in that case:

Wilkie - sorry, can't hear you, it's very muffled huddled under the stairs...

AND ANYWAY DES (getting familiar) what about NATURE (oh yeah, innit beauuuuuuutiful!) controlling itself to suit MY needs? Hardly asking much. Pffuff.

PMSL Walnut, 'Yeah Des, go hug a tree or summit!'

Drags Walnut out from under stairs, frog marches her to lawn and orders her to throw salt on the slimy cretins

merlotmama · 24/05/2007 22:24

No, no Desiderata, slugs and snails aren't creatures, the are the mollusc equivalent of Agent Orange.

On average, snails lay 450 eggs each, in a year, so no fear of extinction, I'm sorry to say.

Walnutshell · 24/05/2007 22:29

Wilkie, for your information, the kicking and screaming underway is TOTALLY justified.

Harrumph.

am so disappointed.

Walnutshell · 24/05/2007 22:40

Heh, heh, TB & Wk: I'm a coward and PROUD! Had quick look with torch and DH (the gardener???) informed me that it was to be expected to find the critters on the lawn. How unreasonable I say.

I think I'll just stick to my Champagne for now... xx

Ha ha! I was expecting some flak.

I like slugs, OK? Call me weird.

I put all my vegetable peelings in a corner of the garden and they congregate there. They just want foooooooooooood, poor likkle slimy fellas.

Don't be mean, gals.

But don't get me started on house spiders.

Damn them to perdition!!!!

hatwoman · 24/05/2007 22:56

house spiders eat flies. slugs eat flowers. I don;t know about you Des but I know which one's my enemy...

DaisyMOO · 25/05/2007 07:52

You can all send all your snails and slugs to me - our ducks absolutely love them, they've picked our garden clean of them!

Walnutshell · 25/05/2007 08:33

Daisy - you are cordially invited to my place - BRING YER DUCKS!

DaisyMOO · 25/05/2007 10:18

Well, we're going on holiday today so unless you're in Norfolk I'm going to have to pass. I could send a photo and you could stick it up in your garden to frighten the slugs away

Walnutshell · 25/05/2007 10:23

Hmm, in Devon - how inconvenient. I could give the photo a try but I don't think you realise quite how ferocious these daddies are. They are often found sporting flak jackets and sunglasses and have no qualms about stalking me in the daylight. Still, I'm not a duck myself so that could be the problem.
