Two opportunistic newcomers.

The first is about 18"-2' tall, quite dense and spreading. The leaves are soft and smell spicy when disturbed.

The second is about 12"-18" tall.

Any ideas?

Not sure about the first, but the second one looks like horse ragwort - poisonous to horses.

A type of celery - the first one? Or just very very dense buttercups.

The second does look like ragwort to me too.

I wonder if the first one might be some kind of cranesbill? DH recommends I-Spot - ispotnature.org - for all your nature-identifying needs.

the first one is a geranium (cranesbill)

How curious that one is a geranium. I loathe the smell of geraniums, and it does not smell like one to me. It can stay. I'll see how I feel about the smell of the flowers.

I think I'd best pull the ragwort, even though I'm in an urban area and it does seem a pretty plant. I got 'bitten' by rosebay willowherb, another pretty plant - took me 6 years to eradicate it from my garden!

And thanks for that plant id website!
