What is killing these plants?

My friend lives in a rented house and has just told me about a problem she's having in the garden. Any ideas what could be killing all of these plants? Ll is aware but not really bothered, DF would like to deal with it if possible?

I think that is cold damage from the snow we had weeks ago, the Fatsia in the first pic definitely looks like cold damage, the conifers in the second pic could possibly be through lack of water, are they in a raised bed? The last pic looks like a Cordyline, also cold damage (I have one in a tub looking similar). Apart from the conifers, they should recover, but will look unsightly.

Lack of water and congested roots, plus the recent cold weather . I would prune the Fatsia quite hard and dig out the other plants. The soil will need replacing. If you want to replant, I would suggest drought tolerant plants. Herbs, Lavender, Rosemary or Thyme would work well.

Winter seems to have taken its toll on the garden. The Fatsia and Cordyline should perk up. Remove the damaged Fatsia leaves, they’ll only turn brown and drop off anyway. I’m waiting for the new growth on my Cordyline before removing the damage.
The fir trees have had it, I’m afraid they are unlikely to recover.
This winter has been particularly harsh on some plants.
