Help with a fuchsia

I’m not sure if I’ve partial killed off my fuchsia or winter has. Not sure what variety if fuchsia this is as it was already planted before we moved in. Last year it had amazing blooms and lots of growth. I think it maybe a bush variety just because it gets so big but could be wrong. Now this year in mid April I pruned it back a little to where the new growth was coming through because it looks so old I didn’t want to go heavy on the pruning so didn’t cut it all the way back which i am now regretting a little. It looks a bit woody still, only grown a little and I’m wondering if it’ll even flower as bushy this year. I don’t remember it being like this last year. Anyone help? I give it lots of food and water

It's early days for fuchsia, mine are only just getting going. I'd have cut it back harder myself, but it looks like it's just fine to me.

Didn’t know you could kill a fuchsia- I’ve been trying for years and it sill keeps reappearing!

I think next spring I will cut it back a lot more and hopefully that will help. Hopefully with the warmer weather this weekend it’ll progress a bit more, I’ve noticed it doesn’t grow as rapidly when it drops below 10.c don’t know why. My new fuchsia loves all weather and just keeps giving

Usual thing with hardy fuchsias is to wait until they start growing in spring, then cut back hard. I cut all stems back to about 20cm

Even when they are at least three years old and established? I thought if I cut it down to just 20/30cm above the ground that it wouldn’t grow back as big. It’s trunks at the thickest must be the width of a 10p - 50p. Would it be too late now to prune back more?

Yes I cut mine back hard to about 4 inches and it is shooting lower down. It will grow and flower well again each year

Your new fuchsia is a young plant grown under glass or polythene with heat. It’s not experienced a winter in the ground. If you don’t cut back an established fuchsia they can easily reach 6 ft or more, depending on variety, but they tend to get a bit scrawny. You don’t have to cut them back at all if you don’t want to
