What plant is this?

Just moved house can anyone tell me what this plant is? I am guessing some sort of rose? Half looks like it's starting to flower however some (most of which I have now cut back) looks black and dead - is this because they have flowered or does it have some sort of disease? Please see pics attached!

Yes, its a rose, the blacken thing is just the head of a flower from last year, remove it.

It’s definitely a rose, with buds. When it flowers you can go to the David Austin or RHS sites ( or ask on here 😊) to identify the name. Depending on that you will be able to find out if it is repeat flowering or has only one flush of flowers. All quite exciting!
You did right to cut out the black and dead looking stems. It would be a good idea to give it some rose food and be on the lookout for green and black fly.

Thank you everyone! Another silly question but the stems from the ground are very thick right upto the garage roof where it then starts to branch off, how far back can I cut it? I would ideally like to get some flowers lower down - I think perhaps maybe it is too far gone where it's hasn't been looked after! Will try and get another picture tomorrow when we move in properly! The garden has been quite neglected and has so much potential! Also any advice on plants for the border welcome 😃

I've cut roses back very far in the past and they've always grown back again - if there's more than one main stem just cut one back hard and the other more lightly, then do the second one hard next year.

I'm very impressed that you're out in the garden ,pruning ,taking pics and asking for advice ...before you've properly moved in !

And you already knew it was a rose .You're going to be a natural !

It does sound like a climbing rose that’s been left to do its own thing. Have a look at the lower stem to see if there are any little nodules. If you cut just above a large one of these, it should sprout there and lower down.
You may not get many flowers this year, but roses are very tough. Don’t forget to feed it!

There are no modules lower down only at the top which is where I've cut the dead stuff from and where there were no buds.

I have to say we are real garden people (although don't know our flowers!!) house has been repainted so couldn't move our furniture in so thought we would make a start on the garden especially since it's going to be hot here for the bank holiday weekend!

Cannot wait to spend a bit of time out there! Old house didn't have flower beds so just potted plants on the decking! We have a few palm trees and a Acer which I may put into the flower bed but would like to add some colour too!
