Plum Tree - Should it have any sign of growth on it yet?

DH and I have planted a fan trained plum tree in celebration of our wedding, but it doesn't seem to have any signs of growth on it yet.

Can anyone tell me if this is normal - or have we planted a duff (that wouldn't be a good omen for our marriage...lol )

TIA

Should have leaves and blossom by now.

SoupDragon · 14/05/2007 20:18

It should probably have little tiny plums by now as well as leaves - our bog standard plum has.

I was going to say that I have a young fruit tree in my garden (also in Worcester) and the blossom has been and gone and we have lots of lovely new leaves. Our tree has been in less than 12 months.

Oh poo! I did wonder because our apple tree has done its blossom and has lovely little apples on it already, but the plum doesn't have anything on it at all - it was like this when we bought it recently from the garden centre though - is it a dud do you think?? I'll be digging it up and taking it back if it is

When did you plant it ?

Whizzz · 14/05/2007 20:41

DH says it is very late to plant a tree now - March at the latest

Washersaurus · 14/05/2007 20:44

It wasn't planted until towards the end of March - I told DH to choose a tree with growth on when we purchased it, but he was adamant he wanted the Kirklees Blue one and this was the only one they had.

I wasn't expecting much from it this year - but am worried there is not a hint of green on it - it is effectively currently a fan trained twig!

DH reckons you should have seen some signs of growth by now. Are the ends of the twigs very brittle & dry - ie dead or are they bendy & supple ie not dead !

Loshad · 14/05/2007 20:53

Have to say i think it's dead - have you been watering it really carefully since planting it - it's been so dry this spring that a newly planted tree should have been heavily watered twice a week.

thefuturesbright · 14/05/2007 21:07

should be looking green and happy by now - if you scrape off a bit of bark on a twig is it green underneath? if so there may be hope, but it does sound pretty terminal to me

Washersaurus · 14/05/2007 21:13

It has been watered plenty as planted near to DH's veg patch (where he spends a lot of time nurturing). The branches do seem supple and bendy rather than brittle and it had lovely healthy roots on it when we planted it.

We've never had a plum tree before, just apples and pears, so weren't really sure what to expect and when
