Tree in a large pot .. full sun?

I have a fence that is in full sun most of the day. I would like to grow a tree next to the fence for some privacy above the height of the fence and interest/ colour but it would need to be in a pot as the ground is patio

Can I do this? Also what tree should I get?

Why don't you look into miniture fruit trees? - we've got a pear and a plum both in pots and they're really pretty.

Hmm, I think you'd struggle to get a tree that would be tall enough to give you significant privacy which was also happy in a pot. You could definitely do small fruit trees, which would love the sun and crop nicely but wouldn't give you privacy. Maybe a bamboo?

You could get a few small trees to grow in pots and put them all on pot stands to give you the height.

I agree, a tree in a pot may not be tall enough. For bamboo, maybe Fargesia murielae?

How much money can you throw at this? You can get large olive trees in big pots that would be perfect for the situation you describe, but they cost in the low hundreds. So beautiful though - I'd love one if my patio had enough sunshine.

We have a bay tree in our garden and it's HUGE! They love full sun, grow well in pots, and will get as tall as you let them.

They also produce amazingly fragrant bay leaves for cooking.

How about a blueberry? Beautiful blossoms in spring, fruits staggered through summer and lovely red foliage in autumn. You would need 3 or 4 for privacy but if looked after they would grow every year and be lovely. I recommend James Wong’s favourite sort - Rubel - produces prolifically and grows well.
