Home made flower pouches

Has anyone made home made flower pouches from hessian? If so, do they rot/how long do they last?

Trying to avoid plastic!

Anyone?

Bump.
No, never heard of this. Do you mean a hessian flower pot to be used instead of a plastic flower pot? Do you have a link or a picture?

Saltcrust · 21/04/2018 14:27

They are sort of long plastic tubes with handles which you fill with damp potting medium. Some have pre-made slits, or you make the slits yourself and plant lobelia or similar in them (you can't see the pouch at all when the plants flower).

Pictures here.

Sort of vertical hanging baskets!

I’m pretty sure that hessian would collapse on you within a couple of weeks...

I know exactly what you mean .

There a lots of ones with a fabric outer but plastic liner ,if it's just the look you're concerned about .

But guessing the point is to avoid plastic altogether - how about buying special fabric

Great to have these responses; Mumsnet is brilliant for this sort of thing!

Thank you Zoolatry I suspected that might be the case!

Peridito that's exactly the nugget of info I was after - thank you - that they are plastic lined I mean! (I live in a country where I can't view them in rl.) And that's a great idea for alternative fabric - will investigate now! I have a fairly sturdy sewing machine so think that might be the solution!

Thanks again!

I have used hessian ones but they did have a plastic coating inside. Both ok but had to buy small plug plants or else you damage roots as you put them in.

X post Peridito those Amazon ones are what gave me the original idea to try and make them (they don't deliver to where I live unfortunately). Very interested to have that link to green gardening company too! Thank you again!

Thanks Dumpylittlepixie that was going to be my next question. I always grow lobelia from seed in seed trays, but it's an awful faff when you transfer the baby plants in to the pouches. Some always get squished! I was wondering if anyone ever planted seeds directly in to the pouches themselves ... .

I have never planted from seed but if you have the space to lay them flat then there is no harm in trying. Once planted up you are advised to lay them flat for a while anyway. I have had great success with lobelia and bizzie lizzie. Keeping them moist is a must and the plastic ones dry out very quickly so add a little bit of gel if you can. Good luck!

Saltcrust · 21/04/2018 17:38

Thank you very much Dumpylittlepixie! That's a great tip about the gel! I do have the space, so I might risk it with a couple of them this year. Yes, it's certainly worth the hassle, I have found that the pendula (I think) varieties of lobelia produce a very good show. Good luck to you too!

do you have cotton trousers/jeans?
premade tube and will hold up better than hessian. but would still disintegrate within a couple of seasons.

Saltcrust · 21/04/2018 17:47

Oooooh; now there's a thought Bluerunningshoes ...what a clever idea ...I do have old jeans as it happens ..!!

My daughter's old skinny jeans would fit the bill!
