Help me chose a climbing rose

I want to buy a pink climbing rose to grow in a large pot on my patio, next to a NE facing wall. I want it to flower for as long as possible. I'm trying to decide between James Galway, A Shropshire Lad and the Generous Gardener. Can anyone recommend any of them?

or may be Mme Alfred Carriere would be better (even though its creamy white)?

Have you checked the shade recommendations? I thought Generous Gardener is the most shade tolerant according to the DA website? I have planted Lady of the Lake last year on a north facing bed, with sunlight mostly blocked by a building (as a potted rose), it bloomed already despite the dry hot summer. This year it seems to be growing healthily and I am excited to see how it flowers. Is recommended for shade and also bee friendly due to the open cup.

Mme Alfred Carriere is an amazing rose but BIG! Just how big a pot are we talking?

The lady of the lake looks gorgeous! Do you have to tie it back or do you have trellis on the fence?
Hmm maybe Mme Alred Carriere is too big for my spot.

I have the generous gardener - our soil is dreadful (new build) and due to a difficult pregnancy the garden has been neglected, but it’s still thriving so I’d highly recommend it as a bomb proof plant. It smells amazing too!

Thank you Pointe, I'm definitely leaning towards the Generous Gardener now!

Alfred Carriere is amazing ! Ours is fabulous.

Following this as I’m trying to make a similar decision but mine is to grow on east facing pillars! I’ve been considered Madame Alfred carriere but do quite fancy something a bit pinker in colour. I’ll have a look at the various suggestions on here before I decide.
Where are you planning to buy from OP?

AvengingGerbil · 21/04/2018 07:43

i have A Shropshire Lad and it is stunning - but I don’t have it in a pot and I’m not sure how well it would do in ‘confinement’.

OP: our fence is chicken wire so every now and then I just tie the rose to the fence with a teeny bit of string. Have not touched the rose since I planted it and it looks very happy in the mainly shady spot. It enjoyed a lovely wet winter though. With a potted rose you’d have to ensure it doesnt dry out, and would receive natural rainwater.

I really have a fancy for Souvenir du Dr Jamain here
Not sure about putting it in a giant pot though, any advice?

WisestIsShe · 22/04/2018 08:14

Oops, sorry. Just realised you want pink.

Thank you so much for all your thoughts. I'm planning on buying from David Austin and I think I'm going for Generous Gardener. Might get Mme Alfred for another area of garden though (not in a pot) as it looks so gorgeous. Tbh I could spend a small fortune on roses!

If you do have room for Mme Alfred Carriere somewhere do put it in, it's got the lovelies smell of any rose I've ever come across!

FuzzyCustard · 22/04/2018 21:31

I've got a Mme Alfred Carriere but my favourite (dark pink and fragrant) is Zepherine Drouhin. Mine's in a big pot with Rozanne geranium underneath and seems happy.
