Garden hose advice

Sounds exciting, I know....

Used my hose yesterday and realise it's past it's best as it was spurting out from the tap connector (I tried it on another outside tap and it was the same) - it is over 10 years old so I can't complain.

Wondering whether to go for the same thing (long ordinary hose on a reel) or to go for one of the new expanding hoses - has anyone used these? Are they any good? My hose lives outside all year round (which may well have been the cause of the problem?)

This thread is quite old now so some of the suggestions may be out of date, but if you’ve landed here looking for garden hose recommendations, we’ve recently updated our best garden hoses page with lots of great options, as tried and tested by Mumsnet users. We hope you find it useful.

We bought one of those yellow curly ones. It was total pita. So it sits in our garage and we bought a straight bog standard one which is perfect.

If the only problem is spurting out at the tap you might just need a new end for the hose and/or a new connector on the tap .

The old curly ones were always getting tangled but I see there are new ones on the market - they look as tho covered in a kind of cloth .

Bought some new connectors and a friend tightened everything up. It seems better, still spurting out a bit but he's said to get some special tape to put on the threads. But then someone else has recommended those new type of hoses....will try the tape first as no point in unnecessary spending Wink

Oh yes - PFTE tape

what stopped mine spurting was an extra washer in the connector - the bit that screws on to the tap

and I keep a bucket under the tap to collect drips

washers and tape from B&Q or Homebase or the like .

Ive had an expanding one for over a year now, it's great. Wouldn't go back to old style ones now. You do need to bring it in over the winter though.

Yes that's the tape! Off to the local hardware shop. Watered my lawn this morning and it's definitely improved, although it's such a pain pulling the hose out and winding it back in...I'm so lazy Blush
