Help me look after this orchid and not kill it

DH recently bought me an orchid. It's quite pretty, but not really my thing, so I don't have a clue how to look after it. What do I need to know to ensure it survives?

Orchids need very little attention. Try not to move it around too much. Give it a bit of food with water every couple of weeks. Cut but the stem when a flower dies. Other than that they are very low maintenance.

Keep it in light, but away from direct sunlight.

Mine are kept in my kitchen window, south east facing. I ignore them mostly, water and drain once every fortnight and use orchid food in the water once a month while they're still growing.
Once they've finished flowering I cut the flower stem back ready for them to chuck up a new one.
They're the only thing I've managed not to kill, probably because I forget they're there most of the time.

Low maintenance is very good news.

It's currently on the kitchen table in the conservatory. It does get very hot in there in the summer months, is it best to move it to the living room which is east facing and doesn't get as much direct sunlight?

Make sure you let it drain after watering. They absolutely hate standing in a puddle. They flower for ages but take a long time to flower again. They like plenty of light. Good luck!

The roots need light, so should be in a container that allows light to get to them, so transparent pot.

I've only ever been able to make orchids live in a bathroom

Flood with water, drain and leave for a few weeks, repeat

I keep mine in the kitchen window - direct sun in the mornjng

Also, I would add that if you aren't used to them you might think they are half dead and you've not looked after them properly, but they are pretty dull looking plants until they flower, so stick with it!
