Snakeshead fritillary

I planted a bag of bulbs around the garden last autumn, and as far as I can see not one has emerged.

Am I being impatient? Shouldn't they be up be now? Are these another that take better if planted in the green, or are they just not that easy?

I was really looking forward to them!

I think you are a little bit impatient. They flower April/May. It has been very cold and so they are likely only just waking up.

Knittedfairies · 16/04/2018 19:19

I thought mine had failed too; no flowers last week but in bloom now. They should have emerged by now..

nobutreally · 16/04/2018 19:21

One flower so far here...

FireflyGirl · 16/04/2018 19:37

Mine are up, too.

I planted loads one year, no trace the year after. They suddenly appeared 2 years after planting. Fingers crossed they make an appearance for you!

MrsBertBibby · 16/04/2018 20:05

Fingers crossed, then!

Where abouts are you? They're out here in Cornwall but if you're in Cumbria you might have to wait a bit longer.

MrsBertBibby · 16/04/2018 21:31

Surrey, but quite a high up bit, so often behind.

I shall keep peering at all the sprout stuff. It would help if I remembered where I put the buggers!

I’m in north wales and mine have been open a week or so. They were already here when we bought the house. When the stalks and leaves are coming through they do look very grass like and I have accidentally weeded a few out from a flower bed. There’s a better clump in some grass under an apple tree - I think they do quite well in grass/meadows.

TheCrowFromBelow · 16/04/2018 22:13

Mine are up but they are in a pot against a west facing wall in Sussex.
I’d forgotten about them so they were a lovely surprise.

MonaChopsis · 16/04/2018 22:14

I planted about 30, and only 3 have come up! I'm hoping the rest will come up next year like Firefly's!!

Still waiting here

MoreCheerfulMonica · 16/04/2018 22:52

Lots of flowers here, but that may because they’re long established.

Zoolatry · 17/04/2018 07:54

Lots of flowers here (long established) some even double-headed, but the 50 new white ones I planted last year have yielded two flowers so far.
Searching in the grass reveals a lot of leaves, so I live in hope for next year. Once established they self-seed in our rough grass, as do the wild daffs.

AstrantiaMajor · 17/04/2018 08:08

10 days ago I thought the same. Now they are starting to bloom and I don’t think I have lost any. I am in London so things are usually ahead here. I think late April to early May is not unusual.

IamEarthymama · 17/04/2018 08:12

Mine are up, sneaked their way through the other plants and surprised me 😊
I have 4, 3 purple and 1 white, out of the 20 I planted.
They keep us guessing!
OP well done for remembering you planted them, many things in my garden really are a surprise

wakemeupbefore · 20/04/2018 09:23

We have hundreds in the woodland part of the garden, started flowering couple of weeks ago. However, ours have been there forever so very established and just do their own thing. Some are turning pure white, some white with purple spots, so pretty!
Perhaps just wait, they might take time to settle and might pop up next year?

having a huge envy moment. I love snakes heads and the big fritillary, but I have lily beetles so it's not worth replacing the ones I had. Sob.

MrsBertBibby · 20/04/2018 18:32

My suspicion is that the squirrels had the bulbs.

Knittedfairies · 20/04/2018 18:39

I found the first lily beetle of the season on the fritillaries today.

FuzzyCustard · 21/04/2018 19:39

Mine are just about finishing their flowering now (N Cornwall). They are either one or two years old.

But several flowers have been eaten; I suspect slugs.

They really like it damp.
