If peonies grow well, what else would?

Every year I buy plants that end up failing in my narrow, terraced, north east facing garden. (It's sunnier than it sounds in summer, as it is about 90ft long.) I want to replace them again this year, but don't want to throw good money after bad.

In my border, I have two peonies that return beautifully healthy and full of flowers year after year. And a pretty, pale pink poppy that does well too. I've also got some very vibrant crocosmia, and we planted a hydrangea last year that has come back this year, though not sure how healthy it looks.

So based on the ones that thrive, what other perennials and shrubs do you think would work? I would happily fill the border with peonies if they didn't have such a short period of flowering!

We have a border with peonies that also has crocosmia that comes back year after year without any issues at all. The buddleia I planted a couple of years back is also doing really well.

Primroses also do well - great for me as I'm constantly digging them out the lawn and replanting.

Not a perennial, but spread some of those mixed wildflower packs some years ago and now nigella comes back year after year. Nasturtiums also return each year after self seeding.

Primroses are pretty, I'll try those thanks!

How about some alliums, echinaceas and the all time favourite, hardy geraniums.
