In the past I’ve dug out as much as possible, but it regrow from every scrap left.

I don't use any killer at all because tests have shown that the killer (eg R-undup) stays in the soil forever and poisons the wildlife.
Also I don't remove ivy at all now since I discovered it is an important habitat for wildlife. Its a myth that it destroys buildings also.

Wauden, we had ivy growing up the side of the house and, while it didn’t destroy the building, it certainly didn’t do it any good. It got behind a gas pipe and caused it to bend, and underneath the tiles on the roof, which were lifting. We tried to keep it in check, but cutting it back seemed to re-invigorate it, as in prune to encourage new growth. We finally chopped through the stems, which caused the ivy to die off, then pulled it from the wall - which took forever. As JT05 said, it did start sprouting again from the base of the plant so I used tree stump killer on it, which saw it off....eventually.
I remember seeing a programme on TV (poss DIY SOS?) where ivy had got into the wall of a cob-built cottage. The wall had to be demolished and rebuilt...

Forgot to mention that we had to have the rendering repaired where the ivy had damaged it.
