Growing vegetables tips for a beginner

I’ve decided this year to grow some veggies. I’m thinking carrots, peas, potatoes, maybe onions in large pots in my small garden.
Any tips welcomed.

Thanks 😊

Lettuces of different types would be quick and easy. Plant a few every 2-4 weeks, so they don't all mature at once, or some go to waste.

Watch youtube videos. Eg Claire's Allotment.

If you have a good sunny spot, tomatoes are quite easy, and you can get tumbling varieties that you can grow in hanging baskets. Carrots can be a lot of work for little reward.

If you eat them, beetroot and radishes grow quite quickly and I've always done well with them in pots.

You can also grow strawberries in hanging baskets, and raspberries in larger pots. Be warned, though, the raspberries may well escape!

Thanks everyone. Yes, was thinking of tomatoes and strawberries. I think I’ll give lettuces a go too.

Oooo I’m excited to see what happens Grin

I'm not the most skilful of gardeners but I always do well with tomatoes. I buy some exotic varieties - striped ones and the big continental ones so I get admiring compliments without actually much effort. Runner beans also grow well in my little plot but courgettes never do well.

Hi, we're novice growers attempting a small patch in the front garden if you'd like some company Jedimastermama?.

Our seeds are on their way from Suttons. I let our preschooler choose so we're getting rainbow beetroot, rainbow chard, purple spring onions, and 3 colour mange tout peas. Also rainbow striped tomato plugs coming later.

So far I'm stuck removing a large stump from the middle of the flower bed, as am quite pregnant. Need to get some help from the neighbours or maybe just plant around it?! We were just going to dig some compost into our London clay soil and hope for the best?!

Strawberries sound yum Jedimastermama. Are you getting a greenhouse for your toms? We have a little sun trap on the front step so I was just going to buy a grow bag for there, not sure if we need a greenhouse too. I see you can buy plastic ones that sit over the top of a grow bag.

I start my tomato plants off by sowing the seed in a propagator, move the strong plants on to little pots which move outside in the day and in at night to harden off. After that the cherry type plants go into medium pots and the others go straight into the garden. I tie them up to bamboo sticks but sometimes miss a few sideshoots (which you are supposed to remove) They have always produced a decent crop, even in poor summers.

May I suggest if you do grow carrots you stick to growing them in deep pots rather than in the ground. They get mullered by carrot fly.

Another fine crop to grow is yellow courgettes. Just remember to feed weekly once they are up unless you are growing them in the ground in which case water regularly.

A good tomato is sungold, beautiful taste and a cherry size.

It's very boring, but prepare your soil, even at the expense of putting off some planting.

Need to think of something for a reasonably sunny large raised bedZ night try tomatoes

GreyCloudsToday yes, would love some company. Smile so hows it going?
I like the idea of a small greenhouse but will probably get a small plastic shelving unit that sits nicely against a wall, do you know the type I mean?

Well I’ve finally decided on tomatos, strawberries, carrots in pots, still pondering about peas and courgettes.
We have a small garden but plan on planting in large pots and the strawberries in a hanging basket maybe.
I love the idea of lettuces but unfortunately the soil isn’t great, and we get a lot of neighbours cats doing their business.

Happy gardening everyone Smile
