I managed to hyjack my own thread getting side tracked trying to identify this tree- any ideas would be very welcome. I’ve been through all the uk trees on the woodland app to no avail so it might be from elsewhere.

No idea but it's rather lovely!

Cathpot · 03/04/2018 19:41

Thanks! I’m actually trying to find out what it is as it’s been upset by the snow/ freezing weather and has dropped all it’s leaves on one side . I thought if I could find out what it was I could give it the right care.

I don't think its a UK native, its an ornamental tree. Lovely bark.

I recognise the leaves but can't remember where I've seen it before. Grrrr.

I have to find out now or it'll keep me awake all night....

Cathpot · 03/04/2018 20:21

I’ve been wandering about in internet hinterland of Lanceolate serrated leaves - come close with some American trees but not with that pattern of veins. It does flower but flowers are tiny and possibly white or pale green as you don’t notice them unless you are looking and I can’t remember what shape. I think they turn up in sort of sprays of lots together

Looks like some sort of Japanese cherry.

Cathpot · 03/04/2018 20:41

I did look at cherries but it flowers in a veeeeery subtle way so it doesn’t match the cherry pictures I can find on line.

Skatingfastonthinice · 03/04/2018 20:46

Look up birch bark cherry, that has tiny flowers.

Cathpot · 03/04/2018 21:43

Birch bark cherry is wrong colour bark - but it looks completely lovely and I may have to get one now!

Wild cherry has similar bark though, and the leaf shape.

Skatingfastonthinice · 03/04/2018 21:46

Oh, birch bark cherry is lovely with winter sun shining on it! Flowers are unimpressive.

WelshPooch · 03/04/2018 21:53

Could it be this Daisy Bush the leaves look very similar

SophieofShepherdsBush · 03/04/2018 22:23

Eucryphia of some sort?

SophieofShepherdsBush · 03/04/2018 22:24

According to dh

trickyex · 03/04/2018 22:33

It could be a Eucryphia or perhaps Hoheria

Not a native tree by the look of it...

stayathomegardener · 03/04/2018 22:42

Any fruit? And what area of the UK?

Cathpot · 03/04/2018 22:58

Haven’t noticed fruits but that’s not to say it doesn’t have any- however if it does they are small and not colourful. We are in the southwest and judging by the way it handles cold weather it is probably not from round here. Looked up all the ideas so far and nothing matches yet, but thanks for suggestions.

Castanea dentata?
This one is starting to bother me!

Cathpot · 04/04/2018 10:16

Not Castanea- leaves aren’t quite right. I’ve been looking at various beech varieties but the leaves on those have very ordered straight veins. Thought it might be easier to track down via the bark but no luck yet. Might have to wait until it flowers this year- if it survives. Am going to give it some horse poo and hope for the best. It’s coming up from a multi-limbed trunk so I’m hoping it has some regeneration capacity

OP posts:
Trethew · 04/04/2018 12:26

I think it could be Hoheria populnea

Cathpot · 04/04/2018 17:03

That might be it! Some of the photos look very close . Off for proper google

OP posts:
Cathpot · 04/04/2018 17:10

I think that is it - there should be some sort of prize! It says it is hardy to -10 but will suffer foliage and stem dieback in very cold conditions . Hoping it will revive. Thanks trethew and all others on the case

trickyex · 04/04/2018 18:06

Good stuff (I think I was first to offer up Hoheria though!!) ;-)

Cathpot · 04/04/2018 19:17

Oh no! Massive thread faux pas- my apologies trickyex and oddly I am going to that nursery this week so i will be able to double check. Thank you everyone for your help- it’s oddly satisfying to know what it is

OP posts:
SophieofShepherdsBush · 04/04/2018 22:43

Smilephew glad that's solved!

trickyex · 04/04/2018 23:14

Ha ha no need to apologise, I feel oddly satisfied too!
