Bare wall needs covering

A big Pine Tree came down in Storm Emma and uncovered the back of the garage.
I intend to plant a replacement tree (not a Pine) not sure what for now but I need to plant something to cover the garage. I would need a few plants I think????
May be something that flowers would be nice!
Seriously not a gardener at all but I love my trees and birds and am going to plant a hedge to attract more bees.
Anyway, I digress. But any help would be welcome for this bare corner.
Biggish garden, South facing in NWest England.

Just as a temporary measure, I would grow some sunflowers.

HonkyWonkWoman · 28/03/2018 20:48

Sorry! That doesn't make sense at all.
My main question is what to plant to cover the back of the garage.
And maybe what tree to plant in front of that.
The area left by the Pine is probably about 4m x 4m.

Oooo! Good idea! For this year!
Could I still plant climbing things to get going behind the Sun Flowers?

You may like magnolia or orchid tree.

HonkyWonkWoman · 28/03/2018 20:53

What a good idea. I was just going to get a Silver Birch or something.

Just looked at Orchid tree. That is beautiful and as its more shrub like would cover the garage.

Budleia (butterfly bush) could be grown like a tree or several small treess and like it's name is attractive to butterflies.

Do you need annual cover i.e evergreens or summer cover?

HonkyWonkWoman · 29/03/2018 00:17

Would like annual cover on the garage. Could put trellises up. But not something like ivy that runs rampant. Is there possibly something that could grow up it that would only grow to 8/10 feet.
Then a tree about 3 m in front of it.

Ever green/winter jasmine brilliant plane hardy and fragrant !or some of the rambling roses as south facing.... There's a classic one that is yellow can't remember the name could cover the wall David Austin are a good nursery..
Otherwise if it's more shrub how about Hawthorn brilliant for wildlife...if u want smallish trees why not a quince or another fruit tree? If u plant column trees you could have a few!

HonkyWonkWoman · 29/03/2018 00:40

Could I mix the evergreen Jasmine with the yellow rose.
Is the rose evergreen as well ( or is that silly question?)

I've looked a David Austin and I will definitely be having a rambler.
Spoilt for choice now, lots to think about, thankyou.

I would plant a row of pyracantha.

Maria1982 · 29/03/2018 10:17

I would try a winter jasmine, or a clematis. Both are climbers but without suckers like ivy, so they need support (trellis or wires), but won’t cling all over your walls (ivy is such a bugger to get rid of once it’s been put somewhere, I really don’t like it!).

HonkyWonkWoman · 29/03/2018 11:40

I'm thinking! On the garage wall, something evergreen, like the Winter Jasmin with perhaps a Climber Rose mingled in.
For the tree in front perhaps a Cherry for Spring colour.
I do like pyracantha I have a hedge of it across the front of the garden, so was looking for something different near to the house.
You've all been so helpful, Thank you so much.

Just to give you an idea, there is a path between the garage and house with an archway and gate. I could grow the Rose over the arch.
So excited now!
I was sad and a bit stressed when my Pine (I loved him) came down but now I can see it as a new beginning for that part of my garden.
You might make a Gardener of me yet MN! Smile

In my opinion, One of the best roses for growing over an Arch is Bankseai Lutea. It is very fast growing, completely thornless, flowers early with masses of sweetly scented primrose flowers which begin in April. It produces whippymstems so,very easy to to train over an arch.

A climbing hydrangea would give you good easy to maintain cover and lovely flowers. You could grow clematis through it.

HonkyWonkWoman · 29/03/2018 17:41

Thank You Astrantia I was needing some guidance on the Rose!

OP posts:
HonkyWonkWoman · 29/03/2018 17:47

I've just googled the climbing hydrangea and it seems to prefer shade more than full sun, so I have a wall at the back, facing the kitchen window that gets early and late sun. I'm going to get one for there.
I'm beginning to feel like proper Gardener now! Smile not really!!!!

I would advise you to buy the largest Hydrangea that you can afford. Mine grew very slowly,

HonkyWonkWoman · 29/03/2018 18:30

Thanks for the advise Astrantia, I intend getting all mature plants, I know, expensive but worth it as I'm impatient!
