Window sills v small greenhouse

For the last couple of years I've been trying to plant up a new ( to me) large garden. I've been growing seeds indoors but now have every single window sill being used plus a couple of extra tables. Not all the window sills get enough sun although the house is cosy. So I'm now looking at a small greenhouse, and my question is, will an unheated greenhouse, in the winter, be better for starting seedlings or should I just carry on the way I am. Sadly can't afford a full sized, heated greenhouse right now or I'd do that. Any advise will be gratefully received before I waste my money

If you can get electricity to a greenhouse, then you can use an electric propagator. Lots of seeds don’t need heat to propagate, I usually sow mine now in an unheated greenhouse. I’m experimenting with a couple of trays in the house to see which do better.
As for the greenhouse, by small are you thinking of a portable plastic type? Many seedlings do well in these, as long as it’s sheltered.also they can be used later for hardening off plants.

For a permanent greenhouse, it’s probably wise to do some research, as often people need a larger on than they think. ( space allowing).

JT05 thanks so much for responding.
The propagation isn't a problem as I have enough room in my boiler room indoors. It's the seedlings that have now taken over the house and they're just not getting enough light as I get little sun at the back of the house ( although plenty at the front)
I've been looking at and like the size and design of the Forest garden Victorian wall greenhouse, it's wood and around £400 and can be bought from Wilko and Argos as well as eBay. I also have a nice space it can comfortably fit into against a fence. However, I just don't know if it would be, for example, warm enough right now to put my seedlings in it. I'm pretty desperate to get them out of the house tbh as made the rookie mistake of growing too much of everything!

What about a propagation lamp?

namechange2222 · 19/03/2018 16:17

UnaOfStormhold I'd thought of that but the issue really is the lack of space for the many seedlings. The ones I have in doors are on five window sills. The only sill free are in the bathroom!
Only two of the sills get plenty of sunlight the other three it's hot or miss but at least the seedlings are in the semi light.
I've been looking over old posts on here all day and it looks like plenty of people have had a similar issue. I really would like a very decent greenhouse if I purchased one so as I've got a special Birthday in a couple of years I think I'll do it then rather than just get a small greenhouse now which may make me even more frustrated!

I have seedlings in our unheated glazed front porch, which stayed over zero through the cold weather. I got a load of wooden stacking shoe racks to maximise space. I am using a heated propagator to rush germination, and once the racks are full I will start shifting stuff out to a plastic greenhouse thing.

It's 6 tiers now

MrsBertBibby that's really useful thank you. That's similar to the amount of light I can give my seedlings at the front of the house. I do have an outhouse where they'll be put to harden off later but there's really not enough light there while they're so young.
I spent yesterday looking at greenhouse porn and have come to the conclusion that what I want isn't within my price range right now so I'll carry on as I am for a couple of years.
My friend said that my seedlings are better indoors with limited light than out in a too cold greenhouse right now ( it's v cold where we are)

I have an unheated greenhouse and lost tender seedlings to frost in it very late on last year (May?). However it was only the ones touching the glass.

Wh0KnowsWhereTheT1meG0es thank you that's exactly the information I've been wanting. I think, all things taken into consideration, until I can afford a lovely cedar wood heated greenhouse the window sills will have to surfice!

Name you are right to save for the best one you can afford. Anything else will not be what you wanted.
I spent years managing with a small, cheap, wooden cold frame type of ‘greenhouse’.
Last year, due to a house move and the ideal situational put it in, I could buy a lovely big cedar greenhouse. I’m so glad I waited, it’s an Alton. Have a look at their website - they do offers.

T05 Alton and Gabriel Ash have become part of my greenhouse porn! I'm really not the slightest bit envious of you, No not in the slightest!
